Tuba 30 Slims in use

#1 Post by Brew »

Hi folks,
Finaly had the opportunity to use the newly built Tuba 30 slims this weekend. and wanted to pass along a few notes.
They are loaded with the Delta 12 Lf, and built as per design. Ther're use is in a DJ set-up.
The room was approx. 50'X 90' with high ceilings. tubas were placed side by side 1' - 2' facing back wall. (Not config. in W with coupling plate) Guests filled room at about 200ppl. They were fed with an old Rane amp tapped into 1 channel each (100watts rated).
They performed exceedingly well balanced with the PA tops at "dinner" background music levels. Full, clean, and precise is how I would describe the bass tones. At dance time they completely over whelmed the tops who could not keep up without distorting.(The tops used are NOT suitable for this size room).
At volume the Tubas retained their tonality, only now on the dance floor the bass was VERY ample-the Rane's clip indicators never came on (90watts). Easily, a single Tuba running perhaps more horsepower would have fit the bill.
I suppose now the next step is to add some decent tops. So here 's a couple of questions:
Just how much amp power would be optimum to fully utilize the Tubas? and,
What Tops would be recommended to "play along" with these guys for the DJ/PA use? (A pair of DR 250's? or?)
Thanks Bill for providing such a great design and the forum's support.
Building more boxes,
Brew

Delta 12LFs will take 200 watts without exceeding xmax, though you can go with a larger amps for headroom, just be sure they're limited to 40 volts output per cab. DR250 or OTop 12 are your best bets for tops.
