4xT30 & 2OT12 review

#1 Post by escapemcp »

Well I finally managed to get the full kit out last weekend. Doing a reggae night in a local pub. Set up in an alcove, so didn't want to corner load as it would have produced some odd modes. Just set up the 4 T30s with the V-plate pointing straight out onto the dancefloor - didn't have time to RTA either :( There was probably about 20 people there and I just couldn't help thinking that it needed to be a little louder. I'm sorry Bill, but I was really starting to wonder where you get those estimated audience size figures from :| . I then took a stroll outside and heard the glorious sound of car alarms going off 100m away. I sat in the van away from the pub go grab a quiet 5 mins and it was then that I realized the amount of bass that these things were putting out!! The neighbourhood was shaking! Those low frequencies really carry!! Still waiting for the day when I can corner load these cabs... I think that will be the day that I may just wee myself!

First guess is a hard null was killing your bass, did you test corner loaded to see how mad the modes were? Best of luck in future gigs. Might also be polarity but that's just a wild guess.

Don't set up your whole stack until you know the best placement for your subs -- or at least that they're not in a null. Use one, check the room, move it and check again. That's what I do every time. Takes less than five minutes.

Yeah guys, I know about placement... it was a horrible space and we were not allowed to set up anywhere else (and we were running short of time). The fact that car alarms were firing off made me realise that these WERE loud... I think it may be me just still getting used to horns.

Enough people have mentioned a similar thing on this board in that they didn't think their subs were loud, until they tried to speak over the top of them and realised that they were! ;) I will be getting them down the bunker soon and corner loading, that will be the best test. I just need to try to control the reverb from the 1m (3') thick concrete walls  Suggestions?? (my best hope is to fill the place with people - I have a space heater for this purpose which should get quite a few of them (the cold ones) in the room to soak up some reverb!!))

Concrete walls are a plus for bass. Id hang a big rug/curtain on the back wall the tops are firing at. Thats the most you can do with limited effort.

Actually, setting up your subs right in front of the alcove introduced the room nodes! Subs belong in direct proximity of a wall, not a couple of feet from (a) wall(s) (back and walls of the alcove) It will create dips as deep as 48dB, completely destructing output!

Bar owners telling me, I have to set up right in that corner they've got in mind, get a polite negative response if and when I think it will compromise sound quality or output. Now some barowners wont agree immediately but setting up one sub in an appropriate location as a test, will convince them at least of your insight in matters.

Nice feature by the way, your car alarm testing facility

As did aiming them outward instead of at the wall.
