Re: Mini SLA's
Very nice, Mike. I like the breadboard crossovers. I think I count five boxes, which would probably mean this is for a 5.1 HT setup? If you've got the room, THT all the way. While you could use any of the Tubas, the THT is specifically engineered for very low frequency response, ala the LFE channel on your receiver.

Re: Mini SLA's
Dang, those things are going to be loud. The 6As are stout little drivers and pretty darn sensitive for HT.
I'd second that if you have the room THT is a good choice for HT since it'll dig low and easily match your mains in volume.

Re: Mini SLA's
Wow, that's interesting. I guess I missed out on a previous conversation? So are we talking about "installed/commercial audio"? That 70v transformer at each speaker weird stuff I don't really understand? Appropriately high-passed, these little giant-killers would sound awesome even powered "normally." Maybe I read into it too much. With the very low power requirements that "background music" requires, you wouldn't need that stout of an amp at all....even running 3 cabs on one channel and 2 on the other...you could balance them by ear and just use the gains on the amp.sine143 wrote:I believe this is for in resturant install? confirmation Mike?
The interesting thing at this point is that there are five cabs (I think) but yet the intended install (again, I think) is in a restaurant. Interesting! Bring on the clarification!

Re: Mini SLA's
Sine is correct its for a restaurant. 6 mains for the eating area 24' x 56' and 2 upstairs outside for the smoking area 12' x 24'.
2 peavey IPR 1600 DSP amps one for down stairs 1 for upstairs. 6 16ohm cabs series wired on 1 channel subs (undecided) on the other channel. Upstairs 2 mains by 1 sub.
The client said he wanted it to be able to go loud when needed if renting out the place for events etc, but he is an overkill kind of guy I suspect he and his business partner, the head chef, will have many a conversation about the music levels.
I ran 1 mini SLA on the peavey to compare it to the OT12 and though its not as loud it is very clean and clear, 6 in mono should sound amazing.
Any one pick up the brace fiasco. I built 1 complete box to try it out, also the big crossover was my first attempt at one, and then when I went into production mode I transferred the depth of the brace incorrectly so the drivers magnet was touching the brace. Out came the mini sledge and was able to shift all down ok but one the brace broke pretty bad so that whats going on with the clamps and the green piece of plastic.
Now the batting is in and it covers up the mistakes so no one will be any wiser. I should be done by weekend with final paint etc Ill keep you all posted.
Thanks for the kind words

Cool stuff. Should sound amazing. You know, when looking at the pictures, I saw the drivers sitting ON the brace, and the rim of the driver NOT touching the baffle and thought "That's odd" but figured it was just you testing something out or something like that. Glad you got it fixed though. Who cares what it looks like on the INSIDE of the cab?

Re: Mini SLA's
The mini SLA is quite common but the design hasn't actually been fully endorsed afaik, so I often see variations between them. They look great though.
With the two piezos, I would still be tempted to make sure the distance between the cones was a s close as possible.

I too was interested in a 'mini' HT design; two woofers, as many tweeters as required. OR, one woofer and a tweeter; kind of like a studio speaker. Unfortunately I don't have the situation to "play it loud"in my environment. I'm curious as to what you came up with here.

Re: Mini SLA's
From Bill's perspective, just having two drivers, it probably doesn't even qualify as an SLA.ripNdeb wrote:I too was interested in a 'mini' HT design; two woofers, as many tweeters as required. Re: Mini SLA's
Very Short Line Array haha
You could use 4 round tweeters if you wanted the highs to line array better, or a single APT80 if you didn't want 'vertically directional' highs.
6ood luck with the build, no one's done a 1/4 SLA yet have they?

Re: Mini SLA's
I'd recommend T24's for the subs. They're small and easily hidden throughout the room. For the main area I'd suggest two subs because that's too big of an area for only 1 sub to cover. If you only use one it'll impossible to match the mains volume to the sub throughout the room. Two will be much better for even volume.

Re: Mini SLA's
Ahh the subs, charles at first I was gonna go with 2 T18, but did not think that would cut it. Then I was thinking 2 T24 but I think Id like to go more was thinking of 2 TTLS but have not go around to actually viewing the place so Im still undecided. I have 2 Kappalite 3010LF on the way I guess ill figure it out soon enough. Oh and the 16ohm mains will be parallel wired for a 2.66ohm load (not series as I mistakenly mentioned before) heck I may even run all 8 down stairs 4 per side or 4 on 1 channel and 2 off another small amp, the venue will really make up my mind. Heading out to check it out today. Cant wait to fire these things up. I have 2 OT 12's theoretically 6 VSLA's should match the 2 OT 12's, I can only imagine for now how loud it could get in that space but im also interested to see what low level quality will sound like as that was the intended purpose from the beginning right
PS THTLP looks like a candidate, I have the lab 12's
