It's also why spiral staircases in castles spiral clockwise from bottom to top as most people are right handed it meant it was nigh on impossible for people to attack properly while they were going upstairs. ie; it was far easier to defend for righties already in the castle...

...this is why left handers were sent up staircases first.

There's also the Latin dexter & sinister thing.

Dexter (the root of dexterous & dexterity, which imply deft skill of a physical or mental form) = Right handed
Sinister (weird, odd, not normal - in a slightly threatening and ominous way) = Left handed

So watch out for those sinister lefties!! I always knew there was something odd about Paul McCartney

I guess that makes all of us here right handed with our dexterous cab building skills (except Timp of course  ;))

Pfffft lol :cussing:
Though it's been proved to be not correct recently, it was long thought that you used the opposite side of your brain compared to the hand you favour.
So left handers were thought to use their right brain.

I happen to know Bruce Weldy and I are both lefties, and I'm sure there are more here.
I'm not saying I build the best looking cabs here, but Bruce's are pretty awesome...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

My 5yr old son is a lefty. He just started drum lessons last week. He's learning right handed, ...but decided unknowingly at home that he is practicing left handed, because there isn't a hi hat with the 2nd hand kit we were given. The crash cymbals is to the right of where the hi hat would be if we had one, so thats getting used for the 8th notes and he's hitting it with his left hand. I figure we need a hi hat pronto or this is going to get confusing. Id rather he play/learn open handed, but i dont know the pros and cons of this and he isn't being taught that at the moment.

Anyway, small gains last night - didnt want to report, but its still a gain:

Largest panel mitre cut - wouldn't fit on table saw, so angled it up over the fence on one of my right-angled jigs, used a bit of trig to modify blade angle settings and got a good result, as below. I also cut the 7/4 braces.

Next time in the garage, I am doing the other remaining (12) handle pockets and the 8 gusset panel pieces (3 horn path and 1 chamber reducer, per cab), ...I think!

Thanks Tom! For your kind words.

Some good progress today. Routed and rounded over the remaining 9 or so handle pockets holes. After breaking my 6mm dia router bit that was required due to how I'd conjured my elaborate oversize template, I figured i would do what everyone else does, and use a follower bit. The only issue is mine (follower bit) is arse about face - the roller is on the end, so the size for size template goes underneath the one you're cutting! Not a big deal except one needs to pop a hole through to drop the router bit through, to get going.

Now, i know the pictures look like various angles of the black hole of calcutta, but there's a purpose - I've primed the insides of where all the handles are, but masked off the joint lines and where the beading goes on the handles for comfort - It's easy to see quite large areas through the handle pockets. I'll be duratexing these regions before assembling the remaining panels together.

Also put braces 7/4 in before getting handy with black spray can. Did I say i love the brad nailer - my, my, it makes joint assembly the absolute quickest events in the cab building process.

Mitred chamber reducer panel goes in next, mustn't forget.

This is what's left to do.

To buy: Access cover screws, ...or use ones from Jack12's
Rubber foot screws
NL4MPR screws

1 Finish cutting last few braces
Paint 'hidden' areas again

2 mitre (saw bench) remaining quantity 8 panels - chamber red. pan., pan'ls 9, 11 & 13
- (panel 13 has 50 deg chamfer - hand plane modify this from a 45deg chamf)

3 Install: mitred chamber reducer panel
panel 8
braces 2/8
9mm dowel in handle pocket & paint it
panel 9

4 Install: panel 10
braces 1/10
16mm quarter moulding in handle pockets & paint!
panel 11
panel 12
braces 6/12
16mm quarter moulding in handle pockets & paint!
panel 13

5 Level protruding upstand piece edges as best with plane
Clamp cover-side on and re-draw screw lines and OFFSET lines for access cover
Cut access cover out
Clean up access cover cut outs
Drill pilot screw holes for fitting sides on

6 Hoover whole cab out and paint visible horn areas (2/3 coats), incl. handle cavity end-areas on cover-side
PL and screw side on.

7 cut off panel 7 selvage
knock protruding nails in
round over edges (3/8 for where corners fit)
fill and sand dings
fit, drill and csk access covers (every 3 to 4 inches)

8 finish paint, incl access covers

9 screw speakon sockets on & other hardware; corners first before feet!
Install drivers
check for leaks round driver gasket

10 install gasket tape to access cover flanges & on chamber red panel edges
screw covers on check for leaks
fix BF badges

It's not much, but I'm claiming it: cut Mitred reflector panels and chamber reducer panel, installed chamber reducer panel, ripped up 1 1/4" strip for framing out access hatch, and readied panel 8 for installation. Inside handle locations pre painted.

Nice work Charles, very neat looking work.

I'm loving the NL4MPR's these days.

Thanks TH. :-)

Those NL4MPR routed recesses are the only boob I've realised I've made - I went to the effort of doing them and only thought about the brace spacing behind the plate they're fixed in. Lord knows why i didnt consider the mouth braces which are the visible ones adjacent to the jack face plates. The jacks should be equi spaced betwwen the side and the brace, but they arent - its a minor aesthetic point.

Minor progress again, but: (1) I'm still claiming it, and (2) I havent been having any post midnight building benders.

Anyway, installed are: panel 8, 8/2 6mm thick braces, panel 9 (reflector), panel 10, panel 11 (reflector), plus quarter-round mouldings in the 2 handle pockets created so far. The other cab is also to do, for the above, but with all pieces cut/mitred at this stage I will probably bring this one up to being ready for the side fixing on, as there are no set-up-time reduction gains to be had by running things in parallel till then.

The progress rate is officially embarrassing now. Here is the remaining stand up panels and braces in the first of 2 subs. I've rounded over the cut outs and front and back edge on the main mouth braces.

You are so close to getting that 2nd side on and soundtesting. If that was me, I'd be itching to hear them! Very nice work though Charles. Can't wait to see the finished articles and to see what you think of how they sound (I'm assuming that you haven't heard T30s before??).

All the best,

Aidan

Thanks Aidan.

I've only heard Chris's T39's. I will probably cry when I hear them for the first time.

This has always been more about the pursuit of excellence first, ahead of the music and gigs. my friend who dj'd at my 40th - he has his own full range 15's - I've offered to use my system at some of his DJ gigs. And see what happens....

One of the dudes I throw these Arc nights with has a few DJ nights elsewhere and I've agreed we can take the system out and field test it. He has a pair of Full range QSC powered tops as well as a dirty big sub but they ain't shit compared to a BFM setup of any size really... They sure do make noise but the quality just isn't there.
