Not many folded or bandpass horns sound good over 180hz. There are a few exceptions, Martin 215 springs to mind.

But I 'm not sure if i really want to spend that sort of $'s just now, and I figure there has to be a diy build that would give similar results.

The link i provided was for the 215 mkIII plan. There are a number of alternative drivers that sound good like the RCF MB15N401 or the PD.1550 for extreme output. Do a google search for more info.

I know it's your goal, but is 200Hz set in stone or just a theoretical point?
ie, if you can only get the kind of response you want out of a horn design to 180Hz, can you cross to tops from there?
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

I could go as low as 170 but would prefer to cross at around 250 if possible.

I think I've got something you might like. dual 3015lf "horn" (straight pathlength with a flared mouth) dispayed at thermal limit 450 watts per driver(still within xmax with the filters shown). this was like 20 minutes, probably a much better driver out there than the 3015lf for this job too. response is even smoother if you use 2 per side. if you like it I'll take a shot at folding it tonight (I suck at folding)

EDIT

pic says 100 liter (thats for a single driver box), the graph is actually for 2 of those boxes parralel (aka, a single dual driver box), so the actual vol is 200 liter (plus some extra for build material).

I guess the issue, as always here, is finding some of these drivers.
At least RCF and PD is available in Australia, though who knows what the asking prices would be...

Marc-O's MKB230 uses 2x12" drivers and goes relatively high - there are a few built in Sydney and Melbourne (they're using half-height versions) with good reports
B&C and 18Sound can be bought from http://www.atprofessional.com.au/

HD15's start to sound very honky if played above 180hz. Also the Turbo copies, the USB and the Martin are far better designs.

Thanks Bas, I'm revisiting the idea of the USB horn, altho they do say it only goes up to 170hz. I have a friend here in Perth who is a rep for precision devices and he does have the drivers for them. The Martin 215 looks like it could be awesome, do you know if there is a recommended PD driver for it ?

As the 186 horns are in direct competition with the Titans i will not discuss them here out of courtesy to Bill, as this is his site.

A quick note on the USBs. The USB stands for United Systems(/Sounds?) of Bristol ( :hyper: ) The horns were designed for the local rigs to build so that everyone had the same bass horns when linking up with other local rigs... does this design ethos sound familiar to anyone??? :D
