What to do with JBL 2204H speakers

#1 Post by mikewinckler »

I apologize in advance, because I know speaker substitution questions are not favored on the forum. I have 4 JBL 2204H speakers that I would like to do SOMETHING with. I'm an experienced woodworker and am confident I could build any of Bill's speakers. I currently have speakers that I made for vocals only, but I would like full range PA speakers (60-1,800Hz). The speakers I can scavenge from my current vocal speakers are Eminence Beta 8 and Eminence 2002S horns. Thanks!
Here are the specs for the 2204H speakers:
fs: 45 Hz
Qts: 0.35
Qms: 1.7
Qes: 0.44
Vas: 89 L (3.1 sq ft)
Xmax: 7.0 mm (0.275 in)
SPL: 95 dB
Power capacity: 350 W continuous
JBL recommended highest crossover frequency: 1200 Hz

I wouldn't use a driver that dates to before 1990 in any design.
As for choosing a plan, the first step is to decide on what your needs are, then what your pack space allows, not what you can make use of on-hand drivers in, especially if they're antiques, even though they may be very nice antiques.

Thanks for your advice, Bill. I guess those speakers are pretty old, and I should just get rid of them and start fresh. They're not only antiques, they're heavy antiques. I've had them so long they're like part of the family.

As old as they are they have value to collectors.

Thanks, Bill. Maybe I'll post them in the for sale forum to see if anyone is interested. There always (shudder) Ebay also. Thanks again.

Here, probably no interest. Places that cater to vintage speaker owners/collectors is where to go.
