1st Gig with a Pair of Jack 10s

#1 Post by CBIERN »

Finally got them finished! Deltalite 2510s melded arrays (though I did just tack the grills on for the evening.)
I spent the last week listening to music on them in my living room and they did fine EQ'd with a Driverack PA. I then created a curve I could live with in the Crown XTI 1000 and set up my keys to practice with them. At that close range (6 ft apart angled to the center and tops about 3ft off the ground me in between) I found I needed to boost the top end but again they did great and I was getting excited to show them off.
I wanted to try for a stereo set up if I could get the room on stage. I couldn't so I ended up stacking them on a stand (see photo) "y" input into the amp and had the most satisfactory gig I can remember.
Gone was the horn shrillness of the Behringer 812 neo that I've been using for a year replaced with a hefty midrange warmth and substantial low end and a high end sweetness that despite the volume didn't have my ears ringing at the end of the night.
The Behringer has 1200 watts written right on the front the Crown is rated at 275 watts per channel at 8 ohms (if those specs mean anything) and the Jacks just cruised with plenty of gas left. I wouldn't want to be that close to them at full output!
So, I can say definitely that a Pair of Jack 10s make a great keyboard setup. I think I like them at least as well as the single Omni 12 I played through recently (better considering the weight of the Omni concentrated into one cabinet) They both even pack into my Ford Escape through the side door stacked in a space 3.5" wider and 2" taller than the Behringer (of course you do have to find space for the amp in a rack case).
Considering the cost of the Jacks an amp and some decent EQ, you won't beat the price of the Behringer et al but your ears and your audience will thank you and I always find the process of building immensely satisfying.
Thanks, as usual, to Bill!

Charlie

A very nice review indeed. And I think a quick build aswell. Well done!

On the clean sound without the fatigue inducement: I emailed the video link of my mildly cranked Jack's to a mate with the comment, 'It's funny, they don't sound loud because they're so clean'. He replied, 'That's the mark of a good speaker, when they are loud but don't hurt your ears'.

I've heard brand name speakers and the sound didn't satisfy, but (other than un-EQ'd distorted mush, what I perceive it may be now) I just couldn't put my finger on it - didn't know why it was so poor and whether anything could be done to make it better. And, I'm still not totally sure why the others sound poor and the Jacks sound great, but they do.
