Wasn't sure where to post this because it relates to my Wedgehorn build, but applies to anybody putting a full metal grille on any cab.
Anyway, the W8's are nearing completion (no build thread because my camera is busted and I only joined the smartphone era 2 days ago). I always planned to have a full grille, so I just ordered some expanded mesh from a supplier I found in the UK, and it's just turned up.
I thought I had ordered mesh with a 10mm x 6mm mesh size and 68% free air space, but thanks to sausage fingers and general clumsiness as a new user of my new iPad, I managed to order the same mesh pattern and size, but in the next wire size up on the list. Now I've seen it "in the flesh" (or maybe that should be "in the mesh") it looks a bit small, and apparently it only has a free air space of 55%.
Is this enough? Can I get away with it, or do I have to bite the bullet and buy another type? No returns on a cut sheet so I'll just have to put it down to idiocy if I can't use it.

Re: Wire mesh free air space
55 is kinda small. I always use the maximum open area I can. For wedgehorns it might be okay. All you can do is a/b it.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

Thanks Leland,
As I posted, I sort of knew the answer. I had ordered enough mesh for the W8's and the J12 Lites that are next up on the build schedule. I've already put good money into the materials, so far, and a fair chunk of my time - so cutting corners at this late stage won't do me any favours.
I just found some nice hexagonal perforated sheet with 65% open area on the same site, can't think why I couldn't find it before but I've ordered that just now.
Don't know what I'll do with the 55% stuff...maybe build a rabbit hutch with it or something, of course that would also mean I'd need to buy a rabbit

Re: Wire mesh free air space
I agree with Leland about it being a bit small, however, I find foam and mesh really soften the sound of the piezo array and make it much nicer.
Unless you are driving your cabs to the limit, you probably won't notice any difference with the 45% grill coverage.
