Try reading this excellent paper by Ethan Winer - he is the guy that owns Real Traps and spends a lot of time tearing silly sound myths apart

Re: Comb Filtering Question
When you walk across the sound field the mids and highs will sound very different depending where you are.doncolga wrote:What does comb filtering sound like?

So this is just a natural occurrence correct or should it not be happening?Bill Fitzmaurice wrote:When you walk across the sound field the mids and highs will sound very different depending where you are.doncolga wrote:What does comb filtering sound like?

It is a natural occurrence, and sound engineers will seek to minimize it.doncolga wrote:So this is just a natural occurrence correct or should it not be happening?

It should not be happening. This explains why it does:doncolga wrote: So this is just a natural occurrence correct or should it not be happening?

That's a great article. I'll definitely be doing several more reads. Interesting history in there too.Bill Fitzmaurice wrote:It should not be happening. This explains why it does:doncolga wrote: So this is just a natural occurrence correct or should it not be happening?

Re: Comb Filtering Question
Donny, I just posted this in another board.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPHpusei0jQ
It's a DSL Jericho vs. a Meyer Mina setup. This has been called finger lobing, and it's along the same lines, but this is showing the effects of it in a line array.
Comb filtering is often discussed in splayed cabinets. At least in my little experience. I'm pretty sure it is the same here. It shows the different arrival times
of multiple sources when pattern control cannot be employed, and there is overlap. Hope this helps.

Re: Comb Filtering Question
If you want to hear what comb filtering sounds like, listen to a what a guitar phaser effect pedal does to the guitar sound. This is what comb filtering sounds like as you walk through the sound field.
The mids and highs come and go depending where you stand.
