I believe it was Bill who stated that 1/4'' jacks should be on all jack plates should it be necessary to use them-I heeded that advice and it paid off on
our last gig. :D

Heat of the battle, clock ticking, for some reason I could not get one side of the pa to work :? ; stop, scratch head, think...my workaround was to string 1/4'' cables from the tops and bottoms of one side to the other sets of subs/tops. PA worked fine, whew!! :D

I checked the cables/cabs after the gig and couldn't find the issue :o

During the build I wired all the tops two 1/4'' jacks to send/receive the tops signal, and the all the subs two 1/4'' jacks to send/receive the low signal.

Word to the wise- install and connect both of your 1/4'' jacks, I'm glad I did and don't want to think about what I would have done sans 1/4s :wink:

Keep a eye out for combination 1/4"/2 pole Speakon. I don't find them cataloged but a few months back MCM had them in a sales flyer and I grabbed a bunch of them.

I usually end up getting everything from Parts Express and having to put the connectors into the dish and rivet it together myself. I haven't really looked around for any prewired/prefab plates, but that would save some time.

Our church has had a few of those self-propelled Wharfedale monitors for 18 mths and when looking last night, they had those combo 1/4"/Speakon connectors.

Great idea really ( lousy monitor though :cry: )

Combinations Speakon Jacks

For what it's worth just wanted to pass along my discovery that these nifty combination connectors from Neutrik are cool but they are not air tight like the usual ones. If you have one handy, try to blow air from the back, you can. I'd say ok for the Wedgehorn but not a high pressure area on a Tuba like the port hole cover.

Bill do you think the pressure is low enough by panel 8 on a Tuba for this jack? What kind of goop would stick well to the back for sealing? Possibly our old friend PL?

The part number is NLJ2MD-V near the bottom of that list.

Markertek also carries the Neutrik silent 1/4" ground lift jacks that guitar players and bass players would love. I also saw those mentioned on the forum here at some time in the past.

I have a bunch of NLJ2MD-V too. I bought a new soldering iron just to do them (Bill's advice--paid off as usual), and practiced like I was trying to get to Carnegie Hall until I could solder my big 14 AWG wire onto those tiny little terminals...

Has anyone has tried the NLJ2MD-H model? The schematic at Neutrik makes it look like there is a bit more meat on the terminals, so it might be a tad easier to solder. Can't find a US retailer, although they seem available in the UK...

No one has ever seen these? Hmm... I used to know a girl who lived in Schaanwald, just up the road from Schaan where they make those. Maybe it's time to give her a call ;-)

Use a decent pair of wire cutters to remove about 2/3 of the strands from the last 1/8 inch of the wire, leaving in effect a short pigtail of 20 ga to solder to the terminals.

I just did a Speakon + 1/4" Jack for a client. I used the D-series locking jack. Only one glaring problem: it ain't air tight. If one is going to use the Speakon connector, they should use a dummy plug or something to plug the 1/4" open jack. It is a big air leak.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

The Speakon combination jack doesn't have that problem.

True, but I use 4-wire connectors.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

I bought 12 over these after reading this thread. They arrived today and if I had any inkling of the teeny tiny pins on the back I wouldn't have even bothered.

I'm not bad at soldering but no way am I going to subject this system to hanging by a tiny soldered thread. With the way cabinets get banged around, (especially in load out) it's only a matter of time before you lose a connection. A connection that would be almost impossible to repair in the field.

No thank you... Their going back. Now I have to figure out what I am going to do now.
