SLA PRO with Dayton PA6's in White

#1 Post by mems »

Hey All,

Got the cd the other day and picked up a sheet of BB 5x5. I made a thread indicating that I have some Jack's with the 3012 but I will be doing a wedding in September, small and "club like" and felt that a set of SLA Pro's would work better for this application than the Jacks. I dont want to throw people out of the building and unfortunately the Jack's dont look so hot on sticks due to my lack of caring for them.

Not a whole lot of pictures of the cuts made although I did pick up this drill press the other day for $60 and a circle cutter for $15 from the hardward store. Best investment Ive ever made. Had the BB cut the day I got it last week and today you can see that the holes are drilled and I am working on finding the best way to cut the straight lines to connect the holes for the tweeters and the port holes. I think I can use my skill saw for the tweets, but the port holes are a little two small to get the blade in and feel safe doing it.

Hopefully, Ill will have everything cut by this evening before I head to work and then I can get to assembling tomorrow. I still need to order my speakers in hopes they will be here in a week or so. These cabs will be covered in white Duratex and I have great hope that I can get some grills made up as Ive seen in another thread to finish off the look. Im not positive on the grills yet as the added $$$ but they do look great and protect well.

mems, do you have a circular saw? If yes, make the saw sled, and use it to cut the lines for the tweeter openings. Line the sled up, plunge the saw and stop close to the ends. Finish the cuts by hand or with a jig/sabre saw.

hmmmm good idea. I'll work on that. See if I can get some of the cuts done today. With so much work on the baffles, its tedious trying to make sure things come out right. Dont want to waste all the "hard work". Thanks for the advice DJP

Took DJP advice and we are all cut out, waiting for assembly. I may see if I can get the internal brace glued up and setting overnight for a semi complete build tomorrow.

Ok question. I'd like to cut a 1/8" dado (saw blade width) in the 1" surround on the front of the cab to slid a grill into to cover the speakers. It would be cut into the two side pieces and the top and bottom. Is this an issue? I would most likely go with 1/4" holed grill to ensure there is minimal audio loss out of the grill or could I go smaller? I will glue the grill in place as well to make sure that they dont rattle. It doesnt appear that there is any xmax on the dayton PA6's so I'll make sure the grill is about 1/2" away from the speakers just to make sure the surrounds on the speakers dont hit. Any one try this?

Your holed grill should have an "open area" of 60% or greater.
When you check out the specs of the material you're looking at for grills, the "open area" criteria should be stated.
Sometimes, that will dictate your hole sizing...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Just a piece of advice on the white choice: be prepared to touch it up after just about every gig.

I did my SLA Pros in white Duratex, specifically for weddings, and it gets dirty, dinged, and marred at EVERY single gig I do, no matter how careful and how quickly I put the covers on.

I got custom grills made for mine, and my only advice there is make sure your cabinet is perfectly square, or you'll have some grinding to do ;)

Interesting to see how you like the PA6, I was thinking of making some with the Daytons as well.

Cool thanks BZB,
I was basing my slas off of yours. I really like the whites clean look but I do wonder about the durability factor. I'm not sure i want to continuously touch them up, even though there will be minimal use with them. Ill get em built and see. Thanks for the advice

If you want to keep em looking clean, you gotta touch em up eventually :(

My wedding planners absolutely love the white cabs, though. They just wish I could get some white stands (to which I say aw hell nah). They always put linens around the stand bases.

Granted, I do about 10 weddings per year. I use them at smaller venues, as well. They're great cabs.

I was going to build some halfsies, but I ended up buying a pair of EV ZXA1s instead so I can use them remotely with my Sennheiser G3 wireless packs.

Progress pics. Just spent another hour in the garage. I'm thinking I will put the baffle and other side on together tomorrow so that I can make sure the boxes are true and square. One of the side panels is about 1/16 to long so I will need to get out the plane to get it shaped down to make sure the top/bottom fits well. Oh yeah and I cut the slots for the grill to slide into as you can see in the pics.

I know its not "needed" but i do smooth out my PL. I just think it looks better and their is less to clean//chisel later. I used a square to get the back panel as square as I could get it before setting them up and nailing them in place. Only missed one brad shot. Clipped it off and went over it with PL. I wish my cheapo nail gun didnt have an offset sometimes as I forget that it does. But then again, I wouldnt be able to shoot staples with it if it didnt. Enough ramblin'

Oh yeah, and I am contemplating building a set of stands that would be about 4 feet tall and would look like a truss except without all the cross braces, just a single extra pole up the middle. The layout of the poles will look like you were looking down on a dice with the number 5 showing. I would build them out of wood (banister/railing) and have a flat top that would be the size of the SLA and a larger flat bottom. Probably 3/4" ply and recess the poles in 3/8 or so, maybe a little more. They would also be painted white except for the bottom which would be black. I'd venture to say the bottom would be 2'x2' and the "truss" would be 11"'s square. We'll see, time will tell.

Thank you. Much like some of the southern states run into the heat here this week is in the oppressive range. Difference is is that we Mainah's arent used to it. 8) Still feels good though.

Today i will probably get the baffles installed and the sides put on. Gotta make sure Im not making to much of an issue wiring everything in after its built. I still have to drill out the bottoms for a top hat, I will recess them into the bottom so that if I do build a stand instead of using my tripods they can sit flat and flush.

Then I need to get my speakers and my Duratex in white, and I should be fairly well good to go. Oh yeah, and I will most likely get some grills made up from reliable hardware.
