Hello

#1 Post by mcm »

Hello,

I am French, so be indulgent with my english.

Computer engineer and audio enthusiast, I try to build an efficient system.

I have many questions to post, but I do not know which section I have to ask.

First of all, I have to redo my lower midrange.

The DR300 with a 15 inch (JBL 2220), is that possible? What response obtained? I have to cover between 70 hertz and 500 hertz.

Welcome to the forum mcm :)

I am interested to know the answers to the questions sine143 has asked as well.

It seems you are wanting to build kick bins. My time here has lead me to believe that kick bins are not necessary, and to build DR300's to achieve that purpose is wasting so much of the DR300's capability.

However, it might be good to build DR300's to cover the entire range from 80Hz up. With their 108dB average sensitivity, they will likely outperform most commercial offerings.

I used google translate:

Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.

Some responses about what i exactly need.

I have a 6 active way system filtered by 2 ashly digital processor.

1/ Sub From 30 Hz to 80 with colossus 15 XB
2/ Bass From 80 HZ to 400 Hz with with JBL 2220
3/ Low Mid From 400 Hz to 1Khz with JBL E120
4/ Mid From 1 KHz to 2,5 with B1C PE21
5/ High Mid From 2,5 Khz to 7 Kh with JBL 2440
6/ High From 7 Khz to 16Khz with Fane HF250

My goal is to change all my "boxes" from way 1 to way 4, starting by the way 2 with a DR300 or a Titan.

But i do not know if it is a good choice, assuming, the way 1 will certainly be a Tuba 60.

Using different length horn designs together will introduce phasing issues.
So, for example, if you use Tuba 60 for (1), tuba or titan for (2) etc, you will need to be able to time align. This does not necessarily address phasing issues though.

Please provide a link for the JBL driver TS parameters for comment about driver suitability...

@Grant Burner,

Thank you for your response.

I already have phasing issues, with my very bad choice of rear loaded horn for way 2 :-)

JBL 2220 is very high efficiency 15 inch speaker : http://www.jblpro.com/pub/obsolete/2220hj.pdf.

I'd build a pair of ported Dr280s, with melded array, add a pair of 20" wide T60s with the lab 12 under them, and then compare the results of those four cabs to your current setup. I think you might be surprised.

If you're already having phase issues this may be due to mixing direct radiator cabs with the rear loaded horn.

I can't see one of Bill's designs that the 2220 can be used in. It's Xmax is to low.
While others have used selected JBL drivers (when the TS parameters otherwise match up) in certain cabs, Bill has done all the hard work in matching up recommended drivers to his designs, so they will generally work best. The recommended drivers will be listed when you buy plans.

I agree with sine143, try his suggested builds and run a two way system. Before you say "it's not what I do", these designs aren't quite like anything else commercially available and lots of us can attest to the fact they work extremely well.
You will save on cab weight, the amount of amps required, cabling, etc

Read this to know how well the DR series cabinet can be. Also, it covers from ~80-90-100 hz up to 20,000hz.
