This is escapemcp's point. You have, at a minimum, 6 conversions happening. That equals latency and noise. Whether it is acceptable to you is a personal choice. My point was that when you have all this A/D D/A conversion going on, going totally digital, if your set up supports it, is both easy and has benefits. This was not a knock on you, personally, Bruce. You just happened to be the closest "target"... wrong place, wrong time, brother!

I want to ask you about the laptop to mixer.... what operations does the laptop perform? Are you using it only for control?

I was just giving you a hard time Phatman.

The laptop can control the Presonus board via firewire and a control program. It is also the go-between for the iPad control.

Normally, I wouldn't bother with setting it up....but, since Presonus offered SMAART software for free, I'm using the laptop to RTA the room. Much easier than with the DriveRack. So, the Driverack is set to flat (outside RTA) and the laptop takes over the board and lets me use the parametric EQs on the main bus to get the room flat using a reference mic.

The program is stupid easy to use. You just tell it to go and it tells you exactly what to do - then you just use the mouse to drag the EQ around until it gets close to flat.

I used it for the first time a couple of weeks ago for the rock band I run sound for. Their old Peaveys have really been sounding crappy - I have to say, this software made 'em much more palatable. It saw a huge bump around 100-150 that I hadn't been able to get rid of. It was night and day.

After that, I use the GEQ on the iPad to clean up the vocal range. I could do that on the board or the laptop - but, it's really easier to do with the iPad and I can walk the room while I do it.

I'll be carrying the laptop and iPad from now on.

Thanks to one of you guys pointing out the 1.414 that Vpeak is higher than Vrms when using sine waves, the figures on my limiter screen are now bang on :) Will be verifying them when I get a chance, but I was using -0.5 on the subs and -3.0 on the OT12s at the free party the other week :( I seem to have got away with it, but won't be running them that hot again!!

Just noticed new class H amps on the Berry website. http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/AX6220.aspx
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/AX6240.aspx

They look like very nice, never seen them before (although someone probably has!).

The 6220 seems ideal for BFM - DSP for Xover and limiting (and maybe EQ) duties. 400W into 8Ω, 650W into 4. Not for me though, far too shiny - they won't look good after a few parties

Nope.

Euroblock connectors = high impedance (constant voltage) distributed sound systems for install (AE) duty.

These are not PA amps designed for touring duty.

The ones with Z after are the high impedance ones (6220Z & 6240Z). The straight up 6220 and 6240 are 'normal' (low impedance) amps. The low-Z amps ARE designed for installs, but that doesn't exclude them from BFM duty. The only Euroblock connectors on these are on the inputs, which could be handy depending on what you are doing with the amps and how you have them wired.

Yup, they sure are nice, but totally out of my league pricewise :broke: ... well they are until I get enough business so I can 'justify' it to the board of executives (me!).

They are class H.

That means they are geared strictly for maximum efficiency at the expense of fidelity which is perfectly okay for distributed sound where the amps are going to see the possibility of being powered for weeks on end, if not months or years.

Review the specs. THD and SNR are nothing to gush over and the chassis layout is clearly appointed for indoor / permanent placement.

Combined with high-SPL, high performance tops like Bill's DRs & Omnis and numbers like that, you'd easily hear the difference between the 62XX and something like their own Europower series.

You could get away with one sure, but it's the wrong tool for the job.

Why do you feel class H will lower the quality of the output signal? The class H amps I've worked on switch the rails before the waveform peak voltage approaches the switching point to eliminate lag and switching distortion.

Pretty much all of the higher power Carver PM and PT series amps used this topology with good results. In the day, Clair Bros. were using these amps extensively.
