First Build THTLP - Joining question
First Build THTLP - Joining question
Just starting my first build, a 17" wide THTLP loaded with a Lab 12.
Local lumber yard only had one sheet of 4x8 BB, and plenty of 5x5, so I bought the 4x8 and ripped it down to 18" for the cabinet sides, my problem is now panel #1 which is 72" long, and all I have is 60" material. How is the best way to join two pieces to make a 72" long piece? Biscuits? Tonge and groove routering?
Sorry if this has been answered before, my search box skills are weak!

Re: First Build THTLP - Joining question
I was about to tell you that it was in the plan. I went to check, and it's not. At least, not in the THTLP plan.
Basically, you cut the edges to join at an angle (30 to 45 degrees), glue and secure everything with braces and clamps. Biscuit would make the alignment easier.

Biscuits in addition to the 30 or 45 deg angles, or biscuits on regular 90deg edges?leamy_f wrote:Tiller wrote: biscuits all the way if you have a jointer

If you're using biscuits, there's no need for bevels.Tiller wrote:Biscuits in addition to the 30 or 45 deg angles, or biscuits on regular 90deg edges?leamy_f wrote:Tiller wrote: biscuits all the way if you have a jointer

Re: First Build THTLP - Joining question
I'm well along in my build, just lazy about posting pics.
I have found that patience, re-reading the plans, attention to info available here and anywhere else and generous amounts PL will prevail.
For some of my bevels, I used ( cautiously ) a belt sander and a bevel square. (Harbor Freight is your friend) .
I also , not being in a great rush, did by some what could be considered an excessive number of dry clamp-ups "just checking the fit" and I don't regret the time. Once right the first time. My neighbor of 34 years is my "senior tech advisor" and a man willing to see his tools put to "good use" = (Doesn't EVERYBODY need more wooferage?)(He's being entertained and amused, but helpful.)
For my panel 9 I had 8-10 clamps, vertically and horizontally, and 120 lbs I added on top just to help secure the support panels underneath.
I think that patience and dry fitting and proper support and clamping and the PL should eliminate any questions or anxiety about an (imagined) advantage of biscuits.

You can never go wrong with dry-fitting and stepping back to analyze things. There's a lot to be said for not being in a rush. It's nice that you've got a helpful neighbor with lots of tools, too.
However, this cab you're building...it doesn't exist. Yet. You know the rule: No pics, no cab.

Click: browse. select file, add the file
insert inline.
That should get you started with making the images show up, make sure the max length/width is 700 pixels or they will get rejected.

Alternatively go to http://imgur.com/ and upload your pictures, once they're uploaded you'll get the picture with a 'direct link' on the right which you can pop it in the [ I M G ] tags in the reply box.
If you look just underneath there's size options, and you want to use 'large thumbnail'. Click that and it'll resize the picture and it'll work perfectly on this site (note it adds a lowercase L to the direct link URL just before the .jpg so if you haven't clicked large thumbnail don't worry, you can just add the L.

Photos aren't made public on the imgur website. I.E. it says WilliamTomkiel does not have any public albums or public images. There's nothing else to see here.
Make the build thread album public and we'd all appreciate it!
