DEQ2496 - Thanks to the BFM forum

#1 Post by Jools4001 »

I decided to start my BFM builds with the purchase of a DEQ2496. Counter-intiutive I know, when I should be rushing around buying BB ply and Eminence drivers, and especially when the purchase of the DEQ means I'll need to start saving for all the other parts from scratch again...

But, my rationale was that since our old singer left, taking his PA with him, and since the new guy brings nothing to the party except a great voice, we've had to cobble together a temporary PA out of bits and pieces that various band members had kicking around - and that means that the mains and monitors are a set of QTX brand Chinese something or other. The mains are active, the monitors are the same box in passive form - they look Mackie SRM450-ish, but the fact that even the active one, bought new, costs a mere £130 ($180?) should give you a clue about the quality. Given these less than ideal cabs to work with, I reckoned that the DEQ could at least do a little bit towards improving the overall sound on the gigs we'll be doing while waiting to get the cash and the build time together to add BFM cabs

So, I ordered the DEQ a couple of weeks ago but it didn't work when it arrived, the display backlight came on but that was it, so I had to return it, and what with all waiting around for the return and new unit shipping it arrived on Saturday morning, just in time for our new singer's first ever full gig with any band that evening.

Didn't have time to RTA them...this is England after all and it was raining buckets outside, and although I'd been reading up on the manual I downloaded a week or two ago it didn't make much sense.

However, thanks to all the info about this device on the BFM forum I was able to short cut all of the manual blurb and just get the job done avoiding the pitfalls of trying to get 'Learn' mode to work on the FBD...did it first time at the gig and it worked first time, like a charm. I set the graphic flat for the sake of simplicity and just dialled in the PEQ so that the cabs gave a reasonable sound against a reference track....

It all seemed to work nicely and thanks to the advice on here I was able to get up to speed with it very quickly....so a big thanks to everyone who's had to learn the hard way and been gracious enough to share their pain so that others don't find it so hard...Cheers guys.

Edit: So how does 1 click to submit = 3 posts? I'll delete the others...sorry.

2 x Delta Pro 8b Wedgehorn 8 Monitors
Subs? Big question mark!

Awesome man. I love my DEQ. I use the graphic EQ to make a mirror image response of the T30's then only 2-3 bands of parametric to shape the mids and highs. The DCX handles crossover and limiting. Just recently tied them together with digital AES, so I guess digitally speaking, the two units are one.
