Oh no soldering?
Oh no soldering?
Is it better to use 60/40 lead and tin cause I bought silver solder at Radio Shack the other day? Any thoughts wiring up my SLA Pro's thanks!

Re: Oh no soldering?
Silver has a higher melting point, which could lead to component damage.

Re: Oh no soldering?
It's very much dependent on soldering iron and technique. High temp iron and quick action is the key to not damaging the components.
In build order:
O12 with no tweeter.
3 x WedgeHorns.
2 x Jack 10 without tweeters.
2 x DR250.
2 x 16" T39
1 x Tuba 24
2 x SLA Pro (sort of...)

The time to ask questions about what to buy is before you buy it.djlivex wrote:Bill . . . . NooooOOOOOH!!!!

+1 to the quote above.Rune Bivrin wrote:It's very much dependent on soldering iron and technique. High temp iron and quick action is the key to not damaging the components.
Silver is all I ever use but I have soldered virtually thousands of joints. Its all about practice. I have done all of my tweeter arrays with silver solder and did not have a single failure. I might add that my silver solder is very small diameter and this is key to melting fast and getting good results.
You should match the size of the solder to the size of the item being soldered to get good results. Use small Dia. solder for small Dia. leads like those found on X-over components. Like wise for larger soldering jobs like plumbing fittings, Use larger Dia. solder for better results.

Thanks guys you made me feel a little better. I bought Radio Shack lead free .032" dia silver solder and will be soldering 16 gauge speaker wire for the SLA woofers and onto crossover plate. Will this do? I have also a new Stahl 5-40 watt variable pencil iron? Thanks!
