Differences between UK piezo's

#1 Post by DAVID_L_PERRY »

Just an update on previous thread (unfortunately now deleted)

This thread has some of the content still listed:-
http://billfitzmaurice.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2166

For anybody who recalls the previous threads about the differences in piezo output (certainly the uk available WLE and CPC ones) while I was making the piezo arrays for my DR280's I ripped one of each apart to see what could make such an audible difference between the two (all of my DR280's use the CPC ones but I had a couple of WLE piezo's left over to compare)

Any body who has ripped one of these apart will know there is very little to a piezo, howevor It was very clear that the WLE piezo paper cone was made of thinner/weeker paper material than the CPC element.

As the CPC cone is much stiffer I imagine this is the contributing factor as to why the CPC elements are singificantly louder than the WLE piezo's. Just nice to understand why there was such a difference.

Judging by the photos the better piezos are the same as those sold as Goldwood at Parts Express. The cheaper ones resemble those sold under the Pyle brand at various other sources.

Yer killin' me! This has to be the first time Goldwood brand has ever been defined as a mark of quality. It's going to take a while for me to get my head wrapped around that one. It's hard to shake off old prejudices: the most recent one being Samsung (still a bit shakey) but better than they were. Before that there were the (now) venerable brands of Toshiba, Panasonic, and (gulp) Sony. As a child growing up in the 60's, I was schooled from the time I could make consumer decisions (I wan' it tantrums excepted) to avoid Japanese merchandise like the plague. The mantra was: "don't get that cheap-jap crap". It was so bad that Japan built a city and called it 'Usa' so they could legitimately (?) stamp the parts made there "made in usa" just to get the Americans to buy them. Now 'made in Japan' is a mark of quality.
There is no technical problem however complex, that cannot be solved or finessed by a direct application of brute strength and ignorance.

"Gimme the hammer... Naaaw not that one, the freakin' big one- I'll MAKE it fit!"

I used the Pyle ones on my O10, and (as I noted elsewhere a moment ago) they rattle at high volumes. That could be because I don't have them mounted in a vibration free-enough manner. (I only used weather stripping with them). However, it may be that they just rattle.

So I just purchased a bunch of round ones from PE for my DR build...and possibly to replace the ones in the O10. Nice to hear that they may be better quality. Eyeballing the outside, they seem like cheap plastic--as do the Pyles. I have pulled a couple out of the bag and shook 'em hard. At least the Goldwoods don't rattle ;-)

I once got a batch of the Pyles and the element housings weren't properly glued to the horns, to the point of falling off. I glued them all w/ABS cement.
