Grilles for DRs

#1 Post by DJ Big Ronn »

If I make a small frame, say 1/2" material by 1/2" wide to put inside of the mouth of my 250's, would it effect the performance terribly. If so, what if I were to cut the back side of the frame at a 45 as not to restrict air flow, would this be any better? Thanks.

That much restriction won't bother, but David Perry has a better way, and you can now get metal grille from Parts Express.

The public can buy direct from Penn-Elcom as long as the $50 minimum is met. Penn (probably) manufactures the grille sold by PE, same as so many other parts sold by PE.
My biggest worry is that when I'm dead and gone, my wife will sell my toys for what I said I paid for them.

I almost ordered those, and I still may, I was trying to find a more economical way since it is just asthetic. I ordered the dcx2496and was going to put the grill money towards a Chauvet vue 3. Awesome light!

Took some photos of my DR290's with the grills so you could see what they look like.

You can see here how I extended the horn braces to provide support to the grills:-

And this is what I sent to Penn to allow fabrication:-

Do you use some rubber spacers in there? How are they mounted?

The grills are simply screwed into the ply mounts. The grills do have foam behind and this acts as a slight dampening fixing, but I doubt very much that the grills would vibrate even withou the foam.

Hey David, they have a 61% free air screen is this what you used. I'm looking at the 48 by 48 sheet. That should do all four of my 250's. Before I contact them and based on what yo have purchsed already, what do you think the cost would be on this.

I know that you special ordered the sizes for yours, but I'll cut and bend mine. Is this material easily bendable or do I need to worry about it snapping whan I make my edges. Thanks

I think it worked out about £20 per grill folded, painted and shipped, but I will check out my receipts at work tomorrow to see what the cost was for all four grills. I would not even consider cutting and bending them yourself unless you have acces to a proper metel folding machine. No way they could be done by hand.

As far as what void ratio they are, no idea, I just went with the same pattern used on my subs so the cabs looked the same..I certainly cant hear any difference with the grill on/off...
