WH-8 Completed.

#1 Post by Dirtysteev »

I just completed a pair of 8's, thought I would share my impressions. First, the build was pretty straightforward. I would advise if you are building two and using 5'x5' sheet goods to rethink the cut layout included in the plans. You can save a lot of waste, I ended up with the better part of a sheet leftover. The only glitch I found in the plans was the back access cover (at 10 3/4" wide) is small for the opening, I made mine just shy of 11" for a tighter fit. As for the driver installation, which I had read was a tricky part of the build, you can offset the screw pattern (don't set the pattern to true north, rotate it 22.5 degrees) and use a flex shaft driver, no problems. My costs came out to $182. per speaker, but I will mention I live in Alaska and we don't get great prices on materials or shipped goods. As for performance, I think these are going to deliver. I have only listened to them at test levels at home, but I am totally pleased with the wide dispersion pattern they throw, which is exactly why I wanted a pair. I will test them on stage in the next couple of weeks/gigs, and report back as to how they worked out in live use. Overall, solid design, nice cabs, I look forward to more BF build projects.

Looking good!

I noticed the panel mounted tweeter option in the plans but i think this is the first time i see them on a photo. Looks alot better than the melded array in the middle in my opinion.

Nice. First time I've seen anybody do the panel mounts also.
If it's too loud, you're even older than me! Like me.

Damn, I feel so, forgotten. :(

Just kidding :D

Nice job, I like the grill. I was considering the 8's, but when I saw the frequency response, I figured I go as small as possible, which is ridiculous, because even the 8's are TINY compared to the Yamaha 12's that I have to help my friend load once a month at our gigs (he runs sound with that group).

Wow, those are nice. I think I may build new WH8s this summer to replace my old plan version ones I built a couple of years ago. Glad I saw your panel mount tweets, may have to go that route too.

Had a chance to test run the wedges saturday at a gig. We had a shaky start, the soundman (who is doing his best but is not a pro) had a difficult time reigning in feedback right away. We have four members singing, and all those mics were producing some really high screaming at terribly low levels. I worked with the guy for a bit trying to dial things in. Discovered he was running high gain/low signal to the monitor sends (I guess his understanding of unity gain only applies to faders and mains). Anyway, once we sent a proper signal to the monitors things worked out quite well. The speakers are definitely sensitive, but we could hear what we needed through the mix, and were actually able to build a very comfortable stage volume because of it. This coming friday I will try them again at a different (much smaller) venue, where we will be mixing from stage (everyone's favorite situation) and see how they sound. I get the feeling I am going to end up wiring the tweets series/parallel to bring down the sensitivity a bit.

I might also mention that a few minutes into the gig I felt I had made a mistake by taking my wedges to the gig in the first place. It was unprofessional and rude to show up and ask the sound guy to run some gear he had never heard of/seen before. We are on friendly terms, and work together often, but I felt like a heel, and realized that in my excitement to try the new wedges, I had stepped over a line. I apologized to the sound guy (and my band) and thanked him for being understanding and flexible, he actually thanked me for getting to learn a bit on some different gear, so it all worked out, but I took a lesson home that night.
