ASHLY CLX-52

#1 Post by 5meohd »

Does anyone have experience with this limiter?

I'm just needing a simple stereo setup for super bassy electronic music. I'm looking to just limit the master output so that nothing gets damaged.

Will this tool achieve that?

If you are running your tops in stereo, then you are one channel of limiting shy. You will need 2 channels for the tops (L&R), and another channel for the subs (mono). For that price, buy a Behringer DCX 2496 and you will have limiting, crossover and enough EQ for a DJ system, all in 1 RU rack space, and money left over for... whatever you wish.

so limiting before the crossover is absolutely out of the question? I mean... it happens in the software already.

I guess I'll have to buy two...

I've been extremely happy with my DCX and DEQ 2496...actually all my Behringer gear. I know the Behringer brand is not the most well respected, but I've had good experiences with them so far, some of which I've had since about 1994 or so (compressor). I've had more problems with other brands actually.

Then buy a dbx Driverack PA or PA+.

You can get one of those for less than two of the Ashly units.

Unless you have some rack covers, the Ashly unit is wide open for someone to crank a knob and blow it all up. Much harder to do that with a Driverack or 2496.

While you could limit before the crossover - there is nothing to stop the crossover from being turned up. That's why the limiter should be last in line before the power amps.

Yes, limiting must be the last element in the signal chain, just before the amps, in order to be effective. Anything added to the signal chain after the limiter will affect the signal level, rendering the limiter useless.

What does, the crossover or the limiting? And, what software?

Have you tried a DCX 2496? There are many in use on this forum, with reliable results. As with any and all manufactured goods, there are always lemons that can slip by QC inspectors.

+100 A little less functionality than the DCX, but they have a better reputation. And, they can be had online for around the same price as the Ashley compressor you asked about.

If you don't like Behringer, that's fine. The point is there are better alternatives to what you are planning. Ashley has a DSP that at least 2 forum members use, Monomer and Wisounds. Check them out.

Although a lot of Behringer gear has a well deserved reputation to be cheaply made and of poor quality, this does not apply to the DCX.
The DCX is highly regarded by many in the industry for its great value, endless options and much greater flexibility in assigning outputs than the DBX pa+

Here's another option:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BUNKER-BPD-1 ... d6d&_uhb=1

It has had good write ups from a couple of users here.

If you look here:
http://sound4us.elementfx.com/
It's cheaper than on the bay...

BBE also make DSP units.

So there are more options...

DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

I have desires to have a completely analog system. There are few needs to get into that.

Having the knobs accessible also allows me to tweak them when needed.

I completely understand that fear about boosting gain after the limiter. I will have to buy a second limiter.

Thank you for your help.

I understand....I lived in that world for a long time. But, now that I've gone digital....ain't no way I'm going back.

Since you're set on staying analog, any particular reason that you want to run stereo? If you run mono, you can get by with one unit. Rarely is stereo a benefit - in live or recorded music - as most of the crowd is way outside the stereo sweet spot anyway.

I think that between Bills melded array and the average venues we will be running there will typically be 10-40 people able to appreciate stereo. With modern minimalistic electronic music it is very important.

I'm thinking that the limiter and crossover will be set and forget utilities more often than not.

shouldn't one of these suffice: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... 8000001496

They keep the average bears away and are fine for mobile applications. In a long term permanent install, someone (usually me :D ) will eventually find there way in. The only device that has kept me away from tampering with it has been a password lock (dbx260), been working on that too but no luck so far :broke: .

For best results, point the loud end of the array towards the audience

I'll keep that in mind for future installs... this is definitely a mobile rig.

I am an advocate of laptop dj'n as long as the sound card is of super high quality. That said, I'm sure the DBX dsp stuff is great but I am surrounded by heads who are analog purists and I also like the sound some buzz and hiss... its kind of an experiment and I can't wait to have it set up and show you guys how happy we are!

one must keep in mind this rig will potentially exclusively be used for 2 channel summed electronic music.
