Wedgehorn 10

#1 Post by gboswell »

I don't post much but I read the forums every day. I'm an old New Orleans guy, bassist/vocalist, still doing the weekend cover thing (since the 60's!).

My bass rig includes two 3012HO-loaded Jack 112 lites but this post is about my WH10. I run full range sequences including some with synth bass and drums, as well as vocals, and electric drums (when we use them) - hence the W10.

We have several FOH systems to choose from depending on the size of the venue. Our small system includes JBL 712M tops. They're quite compact and weigh only 33 lbs. The drummer owns the equipment and he's been repeatedly after me, for multiple reasons that include the aesthetics of matching gear, to give up the WH10 and use a 712M as a stage wedge. I try to be a team player so I agreed to take one home and try to convince myself. He already has 4 of these so I wouldn't need to buy anything. I ran an RTA and EQ'ed to more or less flat with a 31 band graphic. Fired the JBL up side by side with the WH10 and compared my vocal, my bass as well as recorded music through the two.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here and no one will be very surprised at the results but it really is pretty astounding. Of course the wedgehorn requires rather extensive EQing but with a fraction of the power will blow your head off. But it's the clarity that's the real clincher. The JBL has a sort of thick sound that I can only attribute to the fact that there are harmonics present that make it sound almost distorted compared to the WH - like the difference between a bass note through a direct front-firing sub vs through a T39. Sorry, I won't give up my WH even for a much smaller, lighter, free cab listing in the $900 range.

Thanks for posting!
That's a great review.

It's always good to have confirmed what I think as well about other brands.

Oh and Happy Birthday...

Now you can get after him to dump that JBL stuff and do just that.

Yep, I have 2 wedge 10 MKIV's and have proven them beyond doubt to a couple of die hard JBL engineers and their only regret is that they are not powered.
Was a bit worried about their size initially but will not change or swap them for anything else.
