What type of subs do "raves" use?
OK so i'm just curious how they can get 20hz sound out of these dual 18" boxes, because extension doesnt change with them when you stack more. Correct? Do they have them tuned super low, killing spl? anybody? I'm curious.
Before Fitzmaurice, big bass could only be had with just a hook and a nightcrawler.

Most of them probably don't go down to 20 hz...more like 30-40hz, and they use lots of power to get good response down there.

What makes you think raves have 20hz sound? And no, more does not equal more extension per se. They could tune them low, but it's a rare pro-audio company that would tune that low because nobody needs 20hz.DJ Higgumz wrote:OK so i'm just curious how they can get 20hz sound out of these dual 18" boxes, because extension doesnt change with them when you stack more. PKSound is one of the bigger names in rave sound systems and they high pass their subs @ 30hz

I guess I just assumed they did. Even bassnectars system doesn't hit 20?

Excision this spring had the deepest bass I have ever heard at a large venue, which completely destroyed the soundsystem Bassnectar brought. I like Bassnectar's music better, but he was dwarfed by the lightshow and sound Excision has, which was provided by PK Sound. My son and I go to the shows together, where I am the oldest guy there probally. Excisision started his set and my son looked at me and started to say that the bass hits harder in our house... then the bass drop. Blurry vision, tickled the nose, you could feel your clothes vibrating from the massive pressure. It was awesome.

I've always wanted to go to an Excision show, but I figure I'll just have to get a seat near the subwoofers and lose a couple of kHz of hearing capacity in one day.

Re: What type of subs do "raves" use?
i've spend about 10 years going to "raves" every weekend. The most awsome soundsystem i heared was build around 4x AEW422 (or maybe copies) with the Levan extentions IIRC. They will knock your socks off, but they're huge and weigh about 180kg without the extention. Martin 215's also nice.
Life is just a game, don't take it to seriously!

I'm bringing shooting ear plugs with me. I value my hearingbassmonster wrote:I've always wanted to go to an Excision show, but I figure I'll just have to get a seat near the subwoofers and lose a couple of kHz of hearing capacity in one day.

Re: What type of subs do "raves" use?
Only problem is that plugs tend to have the greatest reduction in the upper frequencies leaving the bass less affected, hence why the sound seems muffled to our ears because it's cut out ~30-40 db of and highs, only and only 10-15 db of the bass.gene wrote:I'm bringing shooting ear plugs with me. Re: What type of subs do "raves" use?
stood about 10 feet off the sub stack at excision some months back. 24 PK sound dual 18s (2k watts a piece at 196 pounds). I doubt I heard a note below 40 hz really that night, but the bass was lung busting. rib rattling for sure. These are the same subs used by most big canadian producers (bassnectar, datsik, all of rottun crew), as well as some americans (skrillex, 12th planet etc).

Some, but not many. While they claim 25Hz response a look at the spec sheet shows they're high-passed at 30Hz, and with their internal DSP engaged they don't go as low as the T60. They're nice subs, but not unique.sine143 wrote: I doubt I heard a note below 40 hz really that night.
Re: What type of subs do "raves" use?
I think that the artists/shows mentioned can't really be called "raves", they are more like "rock shows" and "concerts".
If you are talking old school midwest Drop Bass style underground parties they use(d) pretty typical sound systems. No uber low extension by any means. Front loaded 18's, usually duals.
If you want to hear something sweet, get to the main stage @ Winter Warmer this year. Arthur Audio is going to have something sick there. I haven't heard the rig yet, but I know of it....4-way with ribbon tweets built by a cat in GB. I forget the name now though.
