Michael David Dunn, 45, acted "as any responsible firearms owner would have," his lawyer said
I'd be like "guys, could you turn that down a bit? Cheers".

Responsible..? Wow, what an amazing choice of word to use to describe a dude who just flipped the hell out and shot up some kids.

I'm still amazed everytime i hear about how people handle guns
In the states. Back here if you get caught with a gun you will be punished. Even if you didn't use it or if it isn't even loaded.
Only if you have like a zillion permits you can get a gun in a legal way. I'm personally not a fan of firearms. I've to much mishaps at work with them .
It's a cultural thing for a great part i guess.

I will probably catch all kinds of flack about this but here it is anyways. 7 years ago I was at a gas station refueling my company work truck when a teen came beating down the block and pulled into the pumps and began to fuel up his "ride" all the while still blasting his system(sounded to me like 2 15" subs) at full war volume with all the windows down.
After being ask by a mother with kids in tow to please turn down his foul mouthed music in front of her kids(it was a unknown to me rap artist with LOTS of coursing) and several other patrons at the station ask the teen to do the same.
He just acted like he did not hear them and walked in to the station to pay for his gas while his system still played outside at full volume. The lady with the kids just stood there in disbelief as he walked right past her into the store.
So I decided to step in and see what I could do for her. I yelled to her to stay put for a second and not leave. I then got into the back of my work truck and grabbed a 3lbs short handle sledge hammer and opened the drivers side door on his car and proceeded to smash the hell out of his head unit until not only the sound stopped playing but until the deck dissipated into the smashed up dashboard of his car. I got out and shut his door then placed my hammer back into my truck then made my way over to the lady with the kids.
I told her that should keep him quiet for awhile and teach him a lesson on respecting his elders when ask to do something. She thanked me many times and got into her vehicle and pulled away. I had to sit and wait so I could see the look on his face when he got back into his car.
I pulled up to his drivers side just as he was getting into his car and found the damaged dash and missing deck.
He was screaming at the top of his lungs WTF,WTF,WTF. As I told him "Exactly, WTF, Maybe next time you will turn down your shit when you are asked to by other people that do not want to hear it. Sorry about your deck but I could not find the volume knob so I had to make my own. I hope you understand."
I then drove away singing as loud as I could, R.E.S.P.E.C.T.(by Aretha Franklin) as the teen sat there jaw agape in disbelief as to what just happened to his system.
I often think back at that day at the pumps and hope that I taught a fellow music lover the proper way to enjoy a capable system in amongst the public. Just trying to do my part!

Wow...that takes some balls. Could have gotten yourself into trouble in more ways than one. Glad it worked out and hopefully a lesson was learned.

Wow, this story is scary, considering I really like loud music.   I think I'm pretty considerate with my music listening habits though, I don't blast it at stoplights or gas stations and don't roll down all my windows, and don't blast it at night-time. From biggerrigger's story, it sounded like the kid deserved it. If I were a parent, I suppose I would have just turned down his head unit though, or ejected the CD (if it was a CD) from the head unit and broken it.

If you legally own a fire arm and trained properly you would find anyway possible to never use it. If you discharge a weapon in public for any reason you should be able to explain to the authorities immediately why and without hast. Not shoot and run like a gang banger.

This man is a murderer that was looking for a reason to shoot someone. Loud music is not threatening. We pay cops to handle peace disturbances.

Hey Ryan,
Thanks for posting!

For me this brings mixed emotions.
I know it's a constitutional right in the USA to bear firearms.
Over time we've had heaps of news from the US about people (including kids) going in and shooting up schools and so on, or other sorts of massacre type situations.

A firearm massacre situation also happened here about 15 years ago. Once.
There was some doubt about the firearm itself (high calibre semi/automatic, which have never been widely available here), apparently it had been handed in to the police in another state for destruction but ended up in the hands of the shooter.
Of course the conspiracy theorists have also had a great time and there is some suggestion it was all "set up" so that draconian gun laws could be introduced. The premise is that the shooter did not have the skills or IQ to shoot as many people as he did in short time, only a professionally trained combat soldier (ie special ops) could have done so.

What followed was draconian firearm restrictions here.
Gun registration and ownership is tied to your drivers licence, so if you're ever pulled over by the police for anything, they immediately ask you if you have a gun in the vehicle.
Semi automatic weapons (even a .22) and handguns have so many hoops to jump through, most people don't bother.
If a court issues an AVO (apprehended violence order) against you, you cannot hold a gun licence for 10 years from when that AVO lapses.

I am a registered gun owner here, to control vermin, mainly on our property.
Would I shoot up a car full of people because of loud music? No.

Lets just say I did not have any concerns about him and anything he might have been packing.

Grant, We have much of the same laws here in the states for concealed carry weapons permit. Although it varies from state to state.
1.No domestic violence charges either past or in the future no CCW
2.No violent crimes charges either in the past or in the future no CCW
3.No weapons crimes either in the past or in the future no CCW
4.No drug crimes either in the past or in the future no CCW
5.No felonies either in the past or in the future no CCW
6.No sexual crimes in the past or in the future no CCW
And so on.
Basically if you do as you are expected to do you can have not only a firearm but in a lot of states a CCW.
As it was stated above you better have a dam good reason to use your weapon to protect yourself in any event.
If the need arises that you do have to use deadly force to protect yourself you will be arrested immediately and its up to you to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you needed to use such force. So plan on some jail time until everything gets sorted.
