I'm not saying your idea is good, but in the spirit of playing the rescuer (Karpman/Berne) there are ways to improve the stiffness of materials, by making them into more higher performing composites. The particular method I'm thinking of (...my other hobby) is epoxy-grp sheathed plywood. I used the method with 4mm marine ply for making trimaran outriggers. Obviously, no comparison to speaker building and not cost effective, but there, all the same, all other things considered. ...any more caveats anyone?

Just go for it.

My personal opinion:
Harley probably built these with the thinest ply he possibly could have, and only took it on due to the experience he has in building these designs. Despite that expericence, the build wasn't "easy".
Going from 18 to 15kg isn't overly significant.
I'm no brute and I can dead lift my 20" wide all 1/2" ply cabs one on top of the other upright.
I reckon they weigh maybe 25kg. That is way lower than what they substitute if they were direct radiators...
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

That's more or less already been tried several times before - to no avail. Out of desperation I thought he might understand comic strips better and finally get the message through, we'll see.:roll:

I'm impressed with the lightness seeing as my Autotuba probably weighs the same as a your Titan 39

I haven't got the room to build any more cabs at the moment. I'm hoping someone with more means will try some exotic lightweight cab and have it work!

Personally I think 6mm is pushing the limits, but I hope someone more skilled than me out there gets excited, and try it in the name of science, and laugh in the face of popular opinion that a speaker cab has to be thick and heavy to work properly.

Harley do you have a close pic of the Italian Poplar ply? , I had a talk with a company here in Spain, and they say spanish poplar is the same .

Btw those cabs are on the Formula1 class :P .

EDIT: Just got a reply from the company, is the same black poplar in Spain, Italy and France. :owned:

I don't have a close up pic sorry, but look up some of my build threads.

The chinese suppliers say their Birch is exactly the same thing as Baltic Birch too. We all know it's not, even though the tree variey may be similar. Up to you if you want to take the risk.

The species of wood does not matter as much as the plywood having at least 5 equal thickness plies. Using poplar, fir or pine is covered in the plans. I made the words larger and bold to emphasize how important the 5 equal ply is.
