TTLS initial impressions

#1 Post by pmt2234 »

I just finished a 22 inch wide TTLS, using the recommended 10 inch driver. I put it in a 22 foot x 14 foot basement room, about 12 inches from the corner. I'm currently using an amp that measures about 8V when it starts to audibly clip, so about 10 or 11 watts with a 6 ohm load.

Playing test tones at 3V, I measured spl about 100 to 105db in my room. If the impedance is 6 ohms, that's about 1.5 watts.

Subjectively, the thing is obnoxious nightclub level loud on 10 watts in my room. The little amp stays cold to the touch. Bass also sounds nice and clean. Easy to hear when feet are on and off organ pedals. Not boomy.

It was more work to build than a direct radiator box, but worth the effort in the end. Probably a great solution for low power tube amp guys, or just cheapskates like me who don't have big money amplifiers.

Based on how well this one works, I'll probably build more.

Loud on not much power, great result!
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

I don't have pictures, but here's some measurements from about a meter away at 2.8 volts. C weighting was the best I could do w/ my cheapo sound meter.

30hz - 95db
40hz - 102db
50hz - 99db
60hz - 102db
70hz - 99db
80hz - 99db
90hz - 97db
100hz - 92db
110hz - 92db
120hz - 100db
130hz - 96db
