so im wanting to start the breakin process of my subs before long. i tried today but stopped because there is a higher pitched buzz going along with the 25hz sine or any other generated sine. doesnt do it during songs or any other time, just when i do a signal. i tried an online sound generator (http://www.audionotch.com/app/tune/) and audacity.
its not the speaker, its either the amp or the computer but it only does it when i run the sine wave. its not very loud and could be compared to a bad ground. i thought i would run it by you pros before i started in.

Any suggestions?

Man, I had the very same thing using the tone generator in Audacity. I used it before and no such whine. But this time, along with the 30Hz tone there was a completely annoying high pitched 'extra' tone. I was running out of my laptop. Never figured it out. So, I just made my own sine wave in Sonar and used that. I'll have a look for it and you can download it.

Edit: Found it. This is a low B sine wav at about 30Hz. It's about 3 or 4 minutes long and has a short fade in/fade out so it doesn't POP when it begins or ends. You can loop it and break in as long as you want.

Is the signal overdriven? Is the power supply unit making noise?

I once had to make a second CD so that I could get a clean sound because the first one had the high pitch sound.

So, I went to your link ripNdeb and played it off the website and it buzzed. But when I saved it to my desktop as a wav., it seemed to stop. However I have not hooked it up to the amp yet, but I think its gone. So ultimately the problem is solved. Thank you very much ripNdeb!!

Now for the files that I downloaded and xfered to Audacity:

I downloaded various files of the net, various signal generators and so forth, even the one off my phone and all were buzzing. So i started moving files on to Audacity and playing with them. Eventually I found that bit-rate was the problem, when i switched the bit-rate from 44100 to 96000 I found that the buzz went away.

Just a little FYI to anyone else having that problem

Well havent got much done in the last couple weeks, life gets in the way speaker building once again. Luckily back on task this week and here are some pics. I missed up and my extension panel was 2" instead of 1" so I had to trim it down. Otherwise were trucking right along, breaking in subs and saw dust flying.

It works. Use the plastic tube method to isolate the "clicking" sound. Sounds like tinsel leads hitting.

hope so, ill recheck the tinsels again. I briefly looked them and the speakers over but I haven't closely inspected them. I figure its either that or crud inside the coil, which would mean a recone. One of the speakers (actaully the one in the video) didnt start doing the the little rattle thing until about 10 hrs into the test. I sure hope my adhesives were good enough. I bought the abslute best that I could find.

I see from the vid that you don't get scratching on your reconed drivers.

Did the drivers come to you with the original cones etc? If so, were the VC's burnt out?

I'm just wondering if there is a little bit of residue of burnt out VC in the bottom of voice coil section in the couple of drivers that are the problem???
It's can be such a PITA to get that residue out, you can't use anything metal as it doesn't help clear out the gap well. And it's hard to see without a nice bright light.
Does the click dissappear if you take the sine wave up to 30Hz? (I'm thinking slightly less excursion)

You may be able to soak the spider and cone glue with MEK and a cotton bud/Q tip to loosen the glue up enough to take out the recones you have already done and save them if they are not already damaged. Then you would only need new glue...

yeah some of the voice could were freaking fried, totally roached and I could see how this could easily be the problem. In fact, I remember thinking when disassembling a couple of them that copper from the voice could could have fallen into the bottom sections. I should have used a shop vac and my air compressor instead of just compressed air. I clean and cleaned that gap but I totally could have missed pieces at the very bottom. Yeah the click isnt always present, if I play regular music its not as noticeable but its still there.

Thanks for the info Grant, much appreciated. Ill finish breaking the rest in then ill look into trying to actually dissemble them! Just to clarify MEK is butanone correct?
