pair of otop 12's outside

#1 Post by biodad »

greetings. we entertained outside at a county fair last night and due to possible rain, i set up a nursing home sound system. i didnt bi amp or high pass, low pass anything as i decided to use a powered mixer. we are a clean all ages dueling piano show. these have full melded arrays with the 3012 neo cone.
Jon Barnhardt made these and let me say, he did a great job and even drove an extra say 180 miles round trip out of the way to deliver them to save me shipping. how's that for service? dont expect this from any builder but i appreciate his workmanship and high standard of service. these 2 otops are baltic birch which weight more than the auraco but sound the same. i wanted to test them and they are excellent. these things sent the sound all over the park. i touched a couple graphics on my powered mixers 9 band and pumped the 80hz or whatever 3 db. full sound, clear and loud.
i'm not saying these are full range boxes because they arent, but for 2 pianos and voices, a pair per side would do me well at any of our jobs without subs.
i'll still use the full sound system when possible but outside in possible rain, i need to unplug and run fast and i told the event boss that if one drop hits, i'm gone. now days it isnt legal to have an opinion but i dont give a rat. i tried to talk my way out of performing before we unloaded the van but got voted down. it cleared up thankfully and we pounded pretty hard and i turned my monitor off and didnt need it actually. i was positioned about 4 feet behind the otop on my side of the stage as this "stage" was the size of a ping pong table. a good sound system does sound pretty dang good from behind if the low end isnt overly abused as it always is. i ran without my monitor and enjoyed a real nice sounding system from a powered 300 watt 4 ohm mixer. these things are the best sounding boxes i've ever performed through and having built 4 jack 10's with a buddy, i can say these arent any more difficult. easy build, way loud and clean, a genius affordable design that will make you haughtily proud. i love telling musicians that each box has $24 worth of piezos doing the mids and highs. they know i'm a liar and i know i am blessed with a micro wave sized lightweight box from the heavens.
