The Auracanian Indians indigenous to southern Chile and northwest Argentina, successfully resisted Spanish domination for 330 years. To do it, they organized as a nation for the first time in their history and learned horse soldiering. If it wasn't for smallpox and the death of their chief on the battlefield, they would have overrun Santiago and perhaps pushed the Spanish out of their area of South America entirely.
