Hand Truck Modifications

#1 Post by doncolga »

Hey all,

I was at a graduation ceremony last evening and noticed that the sound crew (Yorkville rig and a sweet, compact FOH rack) had some hand trucks with carpeted plywood attached to the hand truck to extend the bottom and make the whole thing wider...looked pretty sweet. Any of you all do anything like that?

Never seen one carpeted, but I've seen a number of them that had a metal "hoop" on the inside of the uprights that could be folded up to act normal, or folded down for extended base. Works wonders when hauling cases of styrofoam cups, when you're looking for quantity not weight.

It was similar to this below, just looked DIY instead using carpeted plywood to make it wider and longer. They had straps built in too. This would be really handy with wide T30's because my hand truck as it is, the T30's tip forward instead of backwards onto the truck.

Unfortunately I've had to use those exact handtrucks numerous times... for their intended purpose: bouncy houses. (I hate those things)

I could see where those would be handy as hell for load in / load out on speakers though. Provided you have the pack space for something that big.

A guitar player I know has a handtruck with a plywood back. lays it down and loads all his gear on it,
2 - marshall heads all his guitars. Makes 2 trips in and 2 trips out

Used to play in a park where parking was off in a distance so I modified a two wheel cart to carry everything I needed in one trip. Extended the base to fit the cabinet and notched out the handle and mounted a rack on the back to hold my music stand and bass. It was quite heavy when I was done and don't use it much now.
