PL now at Lowes

#1 Post by Tim A »

Don't know if this was covered yet or not. Up until a few weeks ago (in my area) only HD carried it.

I also see Liquid Nails now has a urethane formulation, haven't tried it.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I figured I'd better stick with the bible though, so I didn't even bother looking at cost. It's probably fairly similar.

My take is "why bother?". PL does a 100% job, and I see no compelling reason to risk screwing up that much work just to try a different brand and save a quarter.

PL and Liquid Nails made by PL and Loctite are both owned by Henkel Consumer Adhesives. Once upon a time, I fixed their printers at the main HQ in Avon OH....... then I got replaced by a German IT company.
Grr... Manco never should have sold out to the Germans.

Home Depot was out of PL sp I bought the Liquid nails product. I have been using PL and am very happy with it. I did not feel like driving 45 min to another HD. I will let you know how it works. It comes out the same color and oozes...will see if it expands like PL.

Run a test on scraps first... the expanding feature is a big part of why PL works so well.

Strangely enough, my Home Depot didn't carry it. At first, I bought it at Lowes since HD didn't carry it. My HD has started carrying it just in the past 6 months or so, though. Saw another product called "PL Plus" which is a urethane formula - its a gray color with a blue streak in it as it comes out. It's about 20 cents cheaper per tube (yeah, big deal) but dries a little faster than PL, so I use it in areas where speed is important. Its not as tacky or viscous as regular PL, which can also be a plus in certain situations (like working in 20F or lower). I have a feeling original PL Premium makes a stronger bond. PL Plus does *not* expand either.

Here's the tech sheets for both: (notice they didn't do a bonding test for PL Plus)

I thought PL, Loctite, Duck were Henkel brands and Liquid Nails, Devoe, Glidden was ICI?

The Liquid Nails stuff doesnt seem to expand as much as PL IMO PL is much better. I went to Menards and bought the PL,they also have a much larger 28 oz tube. Money was tight so I bought the smaller one but from here on out only the larger will do.

I'm laying out an Autotuba now, and couldn't imagine doing the job without expanding PL. My joints are cut tight, but there is still daylight visible at the joint. PL cures that.
