Finally Tweaked?

I've been gigging with the OT12's for about one year now and after correcting my build errors with them they sounded good and I was happy, especially once I put the DEQ 2496 on them. I usually use about three bands of parametric to get them in the ball park. Tonight I was in a room probably 30' x 100', set of 18" Tuba 30's wall loaded. Tonight I cut around 188 hz on the OT12's and damn...that's the spot I'd been missing. I also changed the crossover to 90 instead of 100 and put really steep slopes on the OT12's at that point. The clarity was just insane...at was the thump...I boosted the T30's a hair more than usual at 60 hz...

Regarding tweaking, I've not sat down under ideal conditions and plenty of time to do it. Last night was typical...It took 30 minutes to load in and about 20 to plug in, then I played a drum and bass sequence (similar to a sound check for a band) and walked out in front. It had that muddy honk on the snare that I've fought with periodically. I was already cutting around 250 with the parametric, but when I shifted that down to about 188 is was quite a difference...very neat to observe that.

When I play live at least, I'd like to take more advantage of the T30 extension, because that was the whole point of those in the first place. My newer mixes do, but my really old mixes (hundreds of them) I continue to gig just don't have really low content. Luckily my arrangements are really thin, usually just drums, bass and piano, so new versions of the ones I do most frequently are not too bad to do.

Last night was the second night of this gig. We were playing for the Georgia Convention of Elks in Savannah, GA, and the National Exhaulted Ruler was there from New York State, so it was a big deal. This was an older group generally, but the ages ranged from probably 45 to 85. I've played for this group for 15 years but this was the first time with the full BFM rig of OT12's and T30's. Before we started playing last evening someone came up and mentioned how good it sounded the night before...better than other time I'd been in there with my previous rig. To me, that was a big compliment. If there's a comment from this group, its often a complaint. We rarely get those, but this comment was nice. Same thing after the performance. We normally have people come up and compliment, but last night was more than usual. Notably, acoustic bass and warm electric bass are just beautiful, and again, clarity was just through the roof.
