That pic makes clear the very basic fly in the ointment: the lower you go the larger the cab must be. When the mains are larger than the subs there's no way things will work out right. Big mains require even bigger subs.
That's not to say that one can't use a 6.5 inch driver in a horn and have it give a good result. But it will have to be a very large horn. IMO smaller than an eight doesn't work well enough to bother with the complexity of a horn build.

Are you taking into consideration the length vs. mouth though? The subs seem to have a much longer path than the mains do, though the mouth on the mains is enormous. The TB 6.5 mouth is about the size of your hand in handshake position. Wouldn't this be a good candidate for some of the mouth area extension tricks?

In regards to the practicality of the driver size, it's much better than a sealed box in terms of output, but it is absolutely still a 6.5" speaker. In the famous "low, loud, small" equation, this one sacrifices loud. If you don't expect miracles, it's worth the (not parcitularly challenging) build effort.

FWIW, the ones in the picture were designed for someone else to use. The picture was of the test setup. His originals were floor-to-ceiling horns with 15" drivers. (Although, he said he liked the TB horn so much he built himself a slightly smaller set tuned to 38Hz vs. 30Hz on the ones he gave away.)
