T48 impressions

#1 Post by anomalous »

I finished my 24" wide 3015LF powered T48's just before new year...

Image

Just in time to provide sound at a very small festival I run. Last few years we have used my pair of 21" wide 3012LF powered T39's as bottom end (on the left in the above photo), and I've been very happy with them.
I knew the T48's would be better, but it completely floored me just how much better they are - it feels like we are talking an order of magnitude. I know its not, but thats what it feels like. Even a friend of mine who is a professional club DJ who played at the festival on the system was raving about them.

Image

I have to admit, they are a lot bigger in real life than they seemed on paper, but i've built these with wheels and handles (they feel like a big wheelie-bin to move around) and they are worth the extra size.

Image

I built in a false bottom to allow me to hide the wiring and back of the speakon sockets, as well as insert blocks so the castors had something decent to attach to. The castors rattle a bit when the bins are in full flight, so i'm swapping them for some funky blue 100mm ball bearing scooter wheels in fabricated aluminium brackets.

if anyone wants to see any more build shots, let me know.

That's an astonishing level of detail for an item of utility. NICE work, sir.

Nice! Great color, that curved bracing looks wicked on the t48, we did something similar with a T60 last month. :chainsaw: What is that color?

they are painted with multiple coats of a "Pavement Paint" designed to be painted on cement driveways, etc. its a hell of a lot cheaper than duratex and tough as hell. also comes in a range of colours, this one being called "Crush" - A nice blue with a hint of purple. usually I do two coats mixed with the texturizer, sanding between each coat, then another two coats without texturizer. gives a lovely finish with just enough texture. if you dont sand after the texture coats, it ends up like sandpaper (is designed for grip). its more work than duratex, I'm sure, but about 1/5th of the price. (and you can have it in any colour you want)

I tried that with less than stellar results. I did the paint they use for ADA parking markings. I found it scratched too easy. Not that the scratches penetrated or anything. I also only did like 2 coats then decided truck bed liner was the way to go, now I am a duratex guy.
2x T39, 1x T60, 1x THTLP, 1x AT(not built by me) 6x DR250

Its for the Lab15. Lab12 fits just fine, needs a 3/4" spacer. I have two t48 with lab12.

I recall seeing that in the t39 plans for lab12. If I'm not mistaken there was talk of switching all plans to the front load. I may be wrong though.

Well the newest plan is front loaded but I guess it works for both designs. I really haven't given the new design more than a glace as of yet. I just really like the top load of the original design.
