So far, I've been able to resist total assimilation. But I haven't tried to buy new underwear since we got married. That will be when the real wrestling match starts.LelandCrooks wrote:Whatever SWMBO buys me. I have no say in my appearance whatsoever.Harley wrote:And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear

Whats the latest Bassmonster? School keeping you extra busy I take it?
School Holidays in Australia were more spread out than you Americans.I'm pretty sure its still same as 10 years ago; 6 weeks off, from just before christmas to end of January- Summer, 2 weeks off, over easter- Autumn, 2 weeks off end of june/ through july- Winter and 2 weeks off september / october- Spring.
My television education leads me to believe you guys get all of summer off, along with a; couple days x-mas, couple days easter and a couple of days thanksgiving? Hence the US phenomenon of the 'Summer Camp', 'Summer Job' and for screw ups; 'Summer School'
I don't know if I ever would have returned to school after having all of the summer off, all those waves going unridden. oh well.
Anyway, whats happening? Baffle done yet, driver trial fitted?
That gasket looks a bit special
Hope it doesn't pose a problem for you.

Would that be an education of "Ernest goes to Camp" "Sleepaway Camp" or "American Pie"?Titanium Hand wrote:Hence the US phenomenon of the 'Summer Camp'
As for the days off you got it, add in a small mix of federal holidays and extend xmas vacation to from a couple days before christmas thru the new year for a little under 2 weeks. As for the surfing during summer break, isn't summer winter there? Or winter summer, June=December, IDK

Driver hasn't been fitted yet, I need to cut out the baffle. I've already traced the driver holes and everything.

Re: Dual Loaded Table Tuba by a Teenager
Finished cutting the baffle last night, and installed on of the drivers. Why so little progress in 4 hours you ask? Well, let me explain.
First of all, here's the cut baffle. The jigsaw blade was getting old and tore some wood off around the hole so I filled it with wood filler.

Then, I drilled the driver holes in the wood, using the driver as a template and etching the holes with a small hand drill for accuracy then removing the driver and drilling the actual holes with a high RPM drill setting to prevent chipping. I then mixed up some JB Weld 8-hour epoxy and set the hurricane nuts in the holes. I then carefully test fitted the driver, being careful with the hurricane nuts not to spin them or damage them somehow.
Angles fitted.....

Yeah, that's right, I mistakenly attached the driver on the wrong side of the baffle. I tried turning it around, angles didn't line up which was weird. Tested panel 4, angles lined up perfectly, but the driver was still on the wrong side. First words out of my dad's mouth were, "Oh no, surely we didn't do that, did we?"

Oh well. It was totally my fault, I rushed and got
At least I caught my mistake by just placing it on the cab to see how it would look, before the epoxy dried. And at least I haven't spun a hurricane nut (knock on wood). And thank goodness I didn't use 5 minute epoxy!!! I then unbolted the driver, pried the hurricane nuts out with a flat-headed screwdriver, recoated them with epoxy, attached them on the other side of the plywood, reattached the driver, and test fitted it again. Bingo.

This mistake would not have been made had I not been rushing, and/or paying attention more closely. 4 hours of work, pretty much squandered for a stupid mistake. Oh well, things happen, and everyone reading this thread will gleam something from it, be it good or bad.
Now, everyone laugh at me for my mistake. Go on. I know you want to.

Re: Dual Loaded Table Tuba by a Teenager
bassmonster, it is actually a very common mistake. Label all your panels clearly. This will help prevent more mistakes like this. This is also why we stress to read the plans until your eyes bleed, the read them some more. Build the cabinet in your head, one step at a time.
The good part of this mistake is you caught it in time, before it became unfixable.

It makes me feel a little less bad about some of the mistakes I made in some of my builds. Notice that I dont have a DR build. Anyway thanks for posting and dont feel bad. Many have done and will do worse, thankfully you allowed everyone to learn from your mistake. TY Bassmonster.

Re: Dual Loaded Table Tuba by a Teenager
I fucked up my last tuba build pretty good... haha
we're two building, and my friend lined up the lines on the side and I cut the panels, and I accidently cut panel 4 one inch too short in one of the ends making it not square, which resulted in panel 4-7 got useless as I cut everything from the same sheet and didn't realise everything was one inch too short in one end until I had them cut out... redo, do right.
Then I have a compasses(?) and I had it set for the 12" driver but someone had obviously got their hands over it and changed it.. which I realised AFTER I cut the whole which was too big.
Then I was about to glue panel 5 where panel 3 is supposed to fit... panel 3 is the driver panel, my friend said "isn't it supposed to be a hole in this panel?.."
Seriously, NEVER rush, and never work when tired, thats when these things show up and they are really awkward...

If your routering at the end, I think the router is the easiest way to cause the most visible damage. Take your time and practice on scrap, think out your maneuvers first.

Re: Dual Loaded Table Tuba by a Teenager
I don't think I'll end up doing much of a finish on it. I might take out the screws and fill the screw holes with Bondo and then Duratex the cab or something later on, but for now I like the ghetto look, it reinforces the "sleeper" theme that I like. My friends will think it's just an ugly plywood box until I turn it on.
Plus, it might make it less attractive looking to thieves than something with a full professional look. I don't plan to blast it in bad parts of town anyway.

Don't give them the chance, when you get to that point fasten it the vehicle.bassmonster wrote:Plus, it might make it less attractive looking to thieves than something with a full professional look. I don't plan to blast it in bad parts of town anyway.
