T39 lab loaded sub WOW!

#1 Post by DJ Higgumz »

Tonight I did a wrestling meet gig, where when the home players come out I played their chosen song. The room was a larger than normal basketball gym. This was the first gig I had doing electronic and rock music, the others I had to keep at conversation levels and I was limited to blues and country. Powering the sub is a mackie m1400i, and before that I have a sonic maximizer and my rane dc-24 processor. the sub itself is built with the 400 watt lab 12, and I built it 30" wide with aurouco ply

Ive heard the system in the gym because i have phy ed and we listen to music while we do warm ups, and there is 2 boxes with dual 18s, and they are designed for boominess like a bandpass. My single 12 is way more louder and goes lower than them. The way horns accomplish this is by increasing the wavelength to make room for amplitude. Where in passive systems it is straining all the amplitude of a shorter wavelenght. I kind of picture it like using a low xmax 18 and a high xmax 15 or 12. It is easier to use the 18 to get the same extension as the other drivers, the other drivers have to have more force to get the same extension. (theory is nulled in horn loading, extension is accomplished with path length) just my hypothesis, correct me if I'm wrong!

I had it corner loaded , and on one side of the corner there were metal double doors. I thought they may have dampened the sound, but is was plenty loud. At first I did sound checks to eq it and get the gains right. And up in the mezzanine they were weighing in the guys, and the coach yelled down it was too loud. I was barely running it at 100 watts and it was at war levels. People came up to me and took business cards, and this one girl has me lined up for her sweet 16. People never came up to me befor this and complemented on my sound until now. overall for amp, processor, sub and other misc. objects to get the sub setup was about 500$, amps and processors being pre owned. The speaker itself highpassed at 35 hz takes every watt the amp throws at it, I can't go any higher because of clipping. Ofcourse you wouldn't run it that high for hours, to prolong speaker life, but theyre capable.

A year ago I was a skeptic, thinking bandpass was the way to go but I have been transformed. Great build!

Nice work but I do hope this is a typo. T39s should be at 45hz if running single or in pairs and 40hz for a stack of 4. You run the risk of killing your driver and you don't want to ruin that girl's 16th birthday...

The lab 12 reaches way down to 20 hz, what would having more cabs do to one cabs high pass?

The driver's frequency response has little to nothing to do with what it will do in a horn. The horn restricts the driver's extension to improve its sensitivity. High pass at 45 hz. In all likelihood, you won't notice the difference, and you'll blow far fewer drivers.

Prof Higgins,

heed the plans.

T60 plays down there, t39 doesn't because it was dezigned to make the best of its relatively small size in a higher passband. In the t39 the driver responds too well for its own good below the recommended highpass.

Stacking them together gets you a lower highpass. I'm not sure exactly why. Intuitively each is pushing against the others as much as with them, so the excursion is limited.,

Do as other before have advised (and what it reads on the plans) and stick to 45hz high pass or higher.

As for the theory behind horn, all it is doing is better matching the resistance so the transfer of energy between the hard cone of the driver and the moving mass of air is more efficient. Think as if it's making the air "thicker" so more energy is able to be transferred and less is wasted.

How the actual dimension affect this is a whole 'nother story. There are some generalizations about horn like the longer the horn the lower it can reach and so on, but there are many factors that give a certain desired result.

But the end result is that they work. But if you are interested in learning more about them, there's plenty of links in the learning sections of the forum. Once you have down the basics, horn resp is a great (free!) tool that will help visualize how they work.

Awesome! I still can't get over my T39, either. Last night DJ'ed for about 50 high schoolers, and they kept saying how great the bass was, and couldn't believe it was a single twelve. One kid was patting the DR200s and saying, "These have got some bass!" I love that they can't find the subwoofer, unless they know to look for it.

Let us know about your sweet sixteen.

Yea today during school this kid said that the whole building vibrated, and he was on the other side of the room. And then you tell them the size of the driver, and then the bricks have been shat. I had numerous complements throughout the day (I didn't say this but I go to the school) and another kid has me lined up for a gig. I thought about putting the sub under the bleachers, so all they would see was my dual 6 mains, but I didnt want to be liable for the bleachers falling apart  my first ever emoji!

As for the highpass, It's not a big deal. no one cares how low it goes, as long as it's loud.

The way horns accomplish this is by increasing the wavelength to make room for amplitude.
.

Um. No. Not in rhe slightest true. :)

horns are quite simply more efficient at changing the mechanical movement of a speaker cone into sound energy. Therefore a given amount of movement produces more sound. Simple as that. No more, no less.

It's awesome that they produce as much as they do, and well done for securing mre work, but please pay attention the the advice here and HIPASSat the correct freq or you WILL toast your driver if you are running one sub.

What freq do you cross from subs to top? I have t30s which to me sounds best crossed at 80.. using jbl eon 15 right now.. I guess this is too low for dr200, your thoughts would be awesome!

90 hz. My tops don't hit low enough for any lower. My next build is dr200 or 250

Congratulations on your gig, and I can certainly appreciate your enthusiasm, but you absolutely need to adhere to hp filter recommendations @ 45 Hz as the plans state. That 10 Hz may or may not sound different to our ears, but it may well be a huge difference with that combination of driver and cabinet, especially when it's being pushed hard. The last thing you want is to be at any point of a gig and have the bass just stop all of a sudden. It's my understanding that you don't hear horns start to break up...they just stop. And it can sure happen with the varying loudness and bass content of recorded or live music. I've not had a catastrophic failure yet, but I have put on tunes that have really surprised me, leaving me very thankful that proper hp and limiting were in place, even if they weren't actually engaged to keep my rig safe.
