From Aust, South of Sydney
I've had a big read around here the last two days, looks to be a great forum. I'm looking to replace two 18" ported boxes. I made them in 2004 which I think that was a little bit before the BFM horns came about. I've had the plans for a while (then lost them but Bill kindly re-sent, thank you) and I'm here to try and decide what to build that will completely demolish my old setup in the bass realm, which is already overkill. Just a home stereo / home studio user here.

Welcome,
I'm trying to decide what to build too
Built:
DR 250: x 2 melded array, 2x CD horn, March 2012 plans.
T39's: 4 x 20" KL3010LF , 2 x 28" 3012LF.
WH8: x 6 with melded array wired series/parallel.
Bunter's Audio and Lighting "like"s would be most appreciated...

Your 18" ported boxes probably play down to 45Hz at a guess. You can go lower and louder but it'll cost you for drivers.
I can't make a lot of noise in my apartment so a single AT high passed at 40Hz does me fine. Do you want the uber lows? Maybe a table tuba or two would satisfy.
If you want to specify how low you need to go it's pretty easy from there to recommend cabs.
Can you fit a pair of THLP or THT in your room? Or if you want to take it on the road, can you afford Lab12 pair, and shift T60?

BAT10, Bad Auto Tuba. Reverse folded TAT to fit JBL 1014D, 350W driver, voltage limit unknown.

itsnew2me I had a read through your thread, I hope to decide well before you do! In in Wollongong.
Gregory, they are tuned at about 28 hz. I don't have a clue what the -3db point is, but I do know they completely shake the house and make things fall off shelves, very quicly. 20hz is very unloaded but still rattles windows. Eqing is required to smooth out room modes and cancellations, and to tame the top end where they cross over to the main speakers. I'm sure the low end gets a lot of help from being in a house too.
The question is, how much better are THT's or Tuba 60's compared to what I have now: http://billfitzmaurice.info/forum/viewt ... =1&t=16755

Quite the Oceania presence these days eh? I doesn't surprise me. Everything is stupidly expensive down there.

Stupidly expensive retail prices yes.
Where it gets us in the hip pocket is niche markets eg eminence speakers.
The larger music store chains actually have some heavy discounting at times, but the population base and wide distances discourage across the board discounting. Throw in dealer agreements and... well you get the rest.
After all the local distributor would no doubt have a good deal wholesale, but it's probably not that cheap to get a container here either...
