OT12 EQ (and fun dead rooms)
OT12 EQ (and fun dead rooms)
I've just stupidly remembered I have access to an acoustically dead room through which is used for radio broadcasts and other assorted nonsense. I should take advantage of this shouldn't I? What's the EQ process exactly when it comes to tops? I have a DEQ and I know how to work the RTA settings but I need to EQ each top in turn do I not?

How I'd do it:
Number your tops, put a label on the jack plate. EQ each top by itself. If there are significant differences between the tops, then you should look for problems (like air leaks).
If you have 4 or more tops, permanently assign each top to a left or right stack and EQ each stack separately. You should notice that you need less EQ to get them flat.
If you have 6 or more tops, you'll have 3 or more on each stack, and you'll probably want to EQ some short stacks.

Re: OT12 EQ (and fun dead rooms)
I currently only have a pair of tops and they went into the studio today to be tweaked and came out with very similar results so at least I know there's no major issues with the build on them. My friend commented on how odd the room sounds due to it's lack of any reflection, you literally step across the threshold and it's instantly quieter and sounds just dies, it's an odd room but obviously stupidly useful for applications such as this one.
So both were EQd and returned almost identical results so I then had a play with the DEQ as previously it'd always been in a fairly small room. Even minute tweaks on the PEQ sounded different which was awesome to hear clearly, I played some vocal stuff that I'm really familiar with through them (Bjork, fact fans) and it sounded good and close to what I think it should sound like so they won't need too much adjusting. All in all a good hour or so's playtime.
Cheers for the advice, I'll remember it when I've got more speakers to juggle about.

I've been in such a room once, years ago. Somehow the lack of reflections made me feel very uneasy about the place. Did something to the unconscious parts of my brain. Couldn't quite put my finger on it but I felt a need to leave the place as soon as I possibly could. Consciously I found the place fascinating but my instincts had me leave the room no matter how interesting it was. Strange places indeed.88h88 wrote:My friend commented on how odd the room sounds due to it's lack of any reflection, you literally step across the threshold and it's instantly quieter and sounds just dies, it's an odd room but obviously stupidly useful for applications such as this one.

Yeah it's a strange room and I know exactly what you mean. Part of me would adore that quiet but the other part says 'no, it's not normal. Please leave'.

Reminds me of when I renovated the living room/kitchen area, and a bedroom. When the insulation was put in, it became really quiet, the only reflection being off of the floor.

I wonder if that's genes left over from when we came down out of the trees. No reflected noise around puts you in the grassy field in the company of the lions. Agorophobia is a hearing defect?
