Attention: All S.E. Michigan Builders! Baltic Birch Source

#1 Post by DJPhatman »

If you are in south east Michigan, especially Macomb county, You have a long-trusted source for true Baltic Birch! It's John's Lumber (http://www.johnslumber.com) locations are listed on the website, and they now carry true Baltic Birch in 5'x5' and all widths, from 1/8" to 3/4".

See this page about 2/3 the way down. I will follow up with pricing soon!

OK, ummm, OUCH!!!!!!

Prices as follows (Clinton Township store)"

1/8" - US$16.99

1/4" - US$29.99

3/8" - US$35.99

1/2" - US$45.99

3/4" - US$69.99

At these prices, they can keep it. The savings to travel to Toledo Plywood, in Toledo, Ohio, pays for the gas used 2-3 times over. Sheesh!

I was looking into this recently too, the guy at Plywood Detroit (in Warren) told me they carry Baltic Birch 4x8, quoted grade "4B", 1/2 inch is $42.35 per sheet. I haven't gone to see whether the stuff is equal-ply / veneered / full of unfilled knots both sides etc.

If you believe the website, the Toledo Menards carries BB in 4x8 sheets, $54.99 for a 1/2" sheet (and it does say it is equal thickness plies so it sounds like the real deal). They also have Arauco, $21.19 for 1/2x4x8 and $29.59 for 3/4x4x8. It seems likely I will go the Arauco route at that price differential.

Do you have prices/sizes for Toledo Plywood?

Forum member, and all-around good guy, "jcmbowman" reported quite some time ago that People's Lumber, on McNichols between I-75 and Conant, has 1/2" Baltic Birch in 5'x5' sheets. But, he also commented that he had to dig through the pile for the least warped sheets.

As far as Toledo Plywood, you really have to call them for current prices on Baltic Birch. Website is http://www.toledoplywood.com.
Copied from the price list on the website. Valid as of October 26, 2011:
BALTIC BIRCH 60" X 60"

1/8 (3-ply) $9.95

1/4 (5-ply) $17.95

3/8 (7-ply) $20.95

1/2 (9 ply) $26.95

1/2 (9 ply) 4' x 8' $45.95

5/8 (11 ply) $33.95

3/4 $36.95

3/4 4' x 8' $61.95

converting dollars to sterling, we limeys think these prices are cheap. Same for drivers and hardware. Thus, why it's impossible to make a living as a cab builder in the UK. Fuel, which drives the price of everything, is near enough $10 a gallon now. Yours is, I see from google, under $4.

It is crazy when you think about it. Birch ply comes from near us, relatively speaking. It is way cheaper in the US. Just about the only thing that may be cheaper here is Behringer gear. Not sure if we should be happy about that. We are :owned:

Menards shows Arauco in stock in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 at the new Chesterfield location. It's getting easier and cheaper to build those cabs now! w00t!

was joking with the girl today that if we convince all the UK dubsteppers they needed bfm cabs they could fly us out there with our tbags stuffed full of eminence and cab hardware bits. our tickets would be cheaper than the shipping plus taxes on multiple cab components, and hell, I'll build it for em too lol.

Their store locator does not even show Chesterfield yet, I live in Howell, zip 48843, and no store on the map...
http://www.menards.com/main/storeLocato ... Code=48843

so people are buying BB from Menards, from the Lansing store

Arauco: cheaper and lighter; admittedly not as good as BB but I'm going for cheap and light. I don't need touring quality cabinets. My Arauco definitely has a bit of warp to it, though it should be no big deal to work around during build.

Mike, the stores don't all show on the locator. Try 48038 in the locator, you'll find the Chesterfield store. Not that it's closer to you than Lansing... I'd have to guess definitely not.
