Dueling TAT build...

#1 Post by LEVLHED »

My buddy and I are building Tall Auto Tubas (TAT). Finally got started today...
I've known him for years, never knew his Dad had something resembling a wood shop stocked with tools! So I sold him on the idea of building ourselves AT's then at the last moment we decided TAT's would be a better idea.
I'm hoping to be able to use the space/tools after this to build some other cabs, but we'll have to see how it goes.

Also, I meant to take the good camera but left the house without it. Just cell phone pics today.

Yeah, there's a lot going on there. Don't think it'll earn any Harleys but it'll get the job done...

Ready for the first cut..

Ooops, that cut was a little off..Larry took a file to it

Laying out the panels

Laid out ready for Panel 1 which is the baffle for the TAT. We got them cut and started figuring out how to make the circle hole but I had to split.

We should be back at it again tomorrow. Will try to remember the real camera though...

Didn't get as far today as hoped, but I guess that comes with the territory of a first build. Ended up making a couple of runs to different hardware stores to find the T-nuts and bolts we wanted. I also had to go to RatShack to get a new stereo cable for my ipod for running the test tones.
Plan is to hit it again next weekend. Doesn't seem like we'll be able to finish them up, but we'll see...

Angle of the camera makes them look crooked (I hope)

Last project of the day...a plywood pusher for the table saw.

I hope you had some nonstick wrap on the guide board when you fixed that first panel on or you may have trouble removing it after the glue dries!
I loved making my TAT after only having built the big cabs it was such a pleasure to be doing something with panels this size. Sounds great too!. :)

did not do that w/the guide boards. Guess we'll see what happens once the clamps come off.
We're being careful to no over do it on the PL...

Would it make sense to install a terminal cup with a built in fuse? You know, just in case. Would it provide any real protection? Or would it just be a pain in the keester...

we're using the Tang Band W8-740P in these

...pain in the keester.

Once you have both TATs up and running, moniter the input voltage to the cabs to get a feel for the cab output on the voltage input. Unless you are an absolute bass freak, you'll probably find that you have enough before you reach the voltage limit.

yeah, decided against the ones w/fuses.

btw, these will be in two separate vehicles..no plans to hook both up at the same time

but, now that you say that perhaps it will happen once:)

Got them built this last weekend except for the recessed access covers. Just plain ran out of time. We're going to rock out the cheater covers until we have time to come up with something else....
I spent some time this week w/ 60 grit and a random orbit sander to at least shore up the edges. Larry works for an industrial painting company and has access to sprayers and left-over industrial paint. Still waiting for a report on the available colors. No clue when we're going to get them finished up yet, we're both super busy for awhile now.
Next step (tonight?) is to bolt in a driver and see what happens.

Not as comprehensive in documenting this time....too busy trying to get the darn things built in the time we had.

really nice cabs im hoping to build one myself. im currently rebuilding a pair of bowers and wilkins dm110i in birch ply and would like a tat to cover the bass. its a bit hard to find mcm or tang band in england so i was going to use a jbl gto 804. my only thought was, is it a big enough sub to use in a house? also should i use a hifi woofer? thanks

I got the 1014D in mine. It's the 10" bigger brother of the 804. It gets antisocial in my apartment with very little input. I used it at a jazz fusion gig, electric piano, bass and kick drum, 20W limit, nice "conversable with a little lean in level" in the room.

30 or so watts estimated in the car, booyah!
BAT10, Bad Auto Tuba. Reverse folded TAT to fit JBL 1014D, 350W driver, voltage limit unknown.

Didn't you bridge the channels for the sub? If I remember right, you should have about 60 W.

It's my best guess. The amp isn't turned up very far as "tops" are 16W drivers. Should be 130W bridged @ full noise.
