4 T48s finished

#1 Post by Ivan Posa »

Just finished my 4 T48s, 24.5in wide with 3015 LF drivers. Hooked up my whole system, 4 T48s and 4 Dr250s driven by a Crown Xti 2000 each side and let her rip. Holy bejeebers this setup is unbelievable. It is so loud and clear that standing directly in front of it at full power is dangerous to the ears. The T48s produce the best bass I have heard from any subs hands down. The Dr 250s need quite a lot of EQ to make them sound good, but I am just waiting for 4 filler and crossover kits from Leland which will hopefully cure this minor problem. This set up is way overkill for my needs but the beauty of it is that gives a huge fat Hi Fi sound at moderate volume without any stress to any of the components or power amps. :D :D :D :D

Congrats, Ivan! That's one hell of a system! Perhaps it's more of a system than you've needed, but maybe it will open some new doors for you. Think about it ... your system's commercial equivalent would be in the neighborhood of twenty to thirty thousand dollars. Once word of your system gets around, you'll undoubtedly find that booking will become much easier, and the paychecks are likely to get bigger.

T48 pics

#6 Post by Ivan Posa »

I will post some pics when I have made some brackets to mount the DR250s in a vertical array. All components are an easy one person lift. I have used an Italian Poplar ply which is fairly light but also on the soft side and not as durable as other ply, so a little care when handling the T48s is required. The DR250s are built from the same ply but covered with rat-fur so less of a problem. I will try stacking the T48S in a vee with a plate on top at some time just to see what they will do. The mind boggles.

Can you spell muahaha? Ivan didn't find a use for his system and I've bought it, lock stock and smoking barrels, with DR250s and W10's and XTI's to drive it all. I've been too busy with work and making music lately to even consider building and it's right time for the band to flex some sonic muscle. Nice one Ivan!

I've found that some EQ on the T48's to tame their rising response improves the low-mid perceptibly. I EQ'd flat up to 200Hz. On their own I liked them just fine but when compared against other flatter response horn subs the low-mids were relatively murky due to the excessive low-mids from the subs. I also prefer a steeper slope on the subs for the same reason.

I'm confused by that. Where do you cross them over? Not 200Hz surely?

At least from hanging out on the forum for so long I'm fairly well versed in the BFM "necessaries of life" so to speak. Seal cabs, limit voltage, high pass subs, phasing correct, check. EQ tricks not so much.....specially the DRs.

XTI's will cover limiting all by themselves iirc. I'm thinking their parametric EQ should do the trick for getting the boxes more or less flat. I have dual 31band Rane EQ for room EQ.

Cross them where you need for the tops. Flatter response in the low mids just helps them not over-contribute to that range.

Still not following. In my brain, lowest of "mids" is 120 Hz, happy hunting ground for DR250, and somewhere below that is where I should have the crossing over so the subs aren't directional.

iirc standard operating procedure with DR250/T48 is to low pass the subs slightly below the high pass of the DR250 leaving the rolloff to take care of this issue? I need to do a lot of revision and catch up on XTI's, I never really thought I'd be running a set of those.

You can experiment with crossover slopes and frequency placement too. I prefer a steeper slope on my subs and a flatter response out of them in the low mids.

+1 That system will produce ear damaging SPLs anywhere in most rooms.
