Come watch a noob try to not screw up an Omni 15 TallBoy!

Pictures are hosted here, but it doesn't exactly want to put them in the right order...

http://s301.photobucket.com/albums/nn68 ... B%20build/

I've been working on this for about two weeks now. I have put in a lot more hours than I expected to, but between my inexperience and the lack of good tools available to me, I've been taking my sweet time.

Up until this project, my total woodworking experience has been helping to frame a house that was designed to be put up by people with no fingers, and helping to install two decks... so I essentially know how to run the equipment and that's about it. I was able to borrow a router today, so tomorrow through Wednesday I hope to round the edges, drill pilot holes for the remaining hardware, Bondo the blemishes, sand everything, spray primer over the midhorn grill and areas with PL, then apply two coats of DuraTex :fingers:

Is there anything else that I should do or check on at this point? Any suggestions? Did I do anything horribly wrong?

I'm really looking forward to running my bass through this!

Maybe the job is taking longer, but that just means you have more time building your cab. And then, when it's all finished you'll be able to say "Yeah, I did that!"

Why did you change the orientation of the mid horn?

From what I've gathered, the plans were updated early this year, and one of the changes appears to be the midhorn/tweeter location. The plans I just bought specify this as the recommended location. I'm not sure exactly why Bill tweaked it, but I trust his judgement.

Oh crap! Well that will teach me not to try and answer posts at sparrow fart without putting my glasses on.

However - the mid horn is oriented correctly according to the OP's pics and the plans

I managed to get the first coat of DuraTex on today, I'm staying up late to throw the texture coat on soon, then installation of electronics and hardware on Friday.

Wow, DuraTex is amazing stuff. I'm about as hamfisted as it gets for painting, and the texture coat went on like I've been doing it for years. I forgot to put the pilot holes in the access cover :slap: so that won't be painted until tomorrow, but the rest of the cab looks simply astonishing right now.

A coworker borrowed my camera, so no pics yet, but I'll be taking a few when I install components on Friday. I'm hoping to stick the cab in the sunlight for a few hours tomorrow afternoon, so it should be far enough in the curing process when stuff is installed.

So far I'm pretty happy with how this is turning out. I'm absolutely terrible with Bondo, so there are some imperfections that still show up, but that just shows even more that I built this with my own two hands.

Does anyone know how well spraypaint sticks to DuraTex? I've got a bass tattoo on my arm that I hope to stencil onto the front of the cab with spraypaint, and I painted a scrap piece with DuraTex so I can test it, but that test won't show how it holds up in the long term.

Access cover taken care of today, touched up the DuraTex in a few spots, left everything in the sun for a bit, and soldered wires onto the Speakon jack and the input side of the crossover to hopefully speed things up tomorrow. My coworker brought back my mountain bike after his dad installed a new bottom bracket and retrued the wheels after some vigorous riding :hyper: but forgot the camera... I put on some great offroad tires and only had time ride down my driveway before my bottom bracket started making bad sounds, so I could use a good ride, but I can wait on that until this cab is making the rumblies.

The cab would have been done tonight, if it weren't for cone slap on both woofers :wall: At a very low volume, I was able to test out the sound without sealing the access cover, and I was blown away by the clarity.

I'm going to sand down the area around the cone tomorrow morning with a Dremel to get rid of the slap, then put it all back together and try it again...

Once the slap is solved, all that I have left is to mount the crossover, tidy up the extra wire in the cab, trim the access cover gasket a bit, and seal her up. Pics to come after that stuff is done.

Dad Gummit - so close! I think the woofer slap is taken care of, but I can't tell because the mid driver slaps more than the three stooges when I turn it up. My internet here at my parent's place is terrible, so pics will come after my rehearsal tonight back at school - my apartment there has 10 meg :ugeek:
