T48s & DR250

#1 Post by guitarkeys.com »

I've been running the T48 sub(s) for over a year now using QSC tops and have been more than pleased with the results. I use them for live sound and on most occations only need to set up one to provide enough low end.

This last weekend I decided to finally break out my DR250 tops and run a BFM only FOH. A four band festival (solo acoustic guitar, 6 piece blue grass, pop rock, and country). Oh, and smooth jazz during breaks...

What can I say other than the fact that they performed extremely well and did what I asked them to. I was a little worried about some of the musicians getting a little "nervous" about the odd looking speakers, but what worked so well is that they got to hear them with the other bands before their own performance and there was no question about the quality of the sound. Clean, Clear and effortless is the best way I know how to describe the sound.

My only question left is that I don't see how the 2 DR250s could keep up with 4 T48s. I had 2 of them V plated outdoors and had plenty left. Maybe I was going a little too easy on the tops as I had plenty of volume for this festival. I will have to play around with this a little more for a final judgement but am certainly sold on the sound quality of the DR250.

Thanks Bill,

It's normal to need twice as many subs outdoors compared to indoors, as you have no boundary reinforcement. Tops don't use boundary reinforcement so they're unaffected.

Also, don't forget it depends a bit on the components and music style. 2 subs to 1 top is nice outdoors and for bass heavy music. 1:1 is good indoors. I have also noticed that I can hear the difference when I really push a pair of T48's with LF content. It's not as noticable from 50-100', but up close there's a flabby tone that I'm guessing is due to increased harmonic distortion. It doesn't manifest itself at lower volumes with the same content. Good description is that it goes from being tight and defined like I'm used to, to sounding like the typical car audio sub.

I running the opposite - 4 tops to 2 subs. The subs are plenty v-plated. I can get by on running one set of OT12s, but the second set really seems to smooth 'em out and I don't worry about blowing one with a hard kick or bass slap.

6 - T39 3012LF
4 - OT12 2512
1 - T24
1 - SLA Pro
2 - XF210

That's my tyPical as well if not 3:2. Dr250 though is a little better than the ot12. Maybe about the same in final output with 3012ho's
