Toa HX5B - SLA pro beats this ????

It's got four five-inch woofers, so I'd say a four six-inch woofer loaded SLA Pro has it matched, if not beat. The angling of the array elements looks impressive, but in practical usage it's of almost no benefit with a cab that small. Rooms that are deep enough to make use of that feature aren't going to be covered by four five inch drivers.

I've installed quite a few of those and they are pretty impressive. I just installed 2 SLA Pro's but I haven't heard them cranked yet. I only did the installing-not the tuning. I'm going back to the venue next week to hear the whole system so I'll let you know how they compare to the HX5.

Cool, I've emailed for the SLA Pro plans. I'll build a demo. If the SLA Pro has it well beat, the sale price needs to be around $NZ 900. Also I have to weather-proof it.

I've tuned HX5Bs in a church fairly recently, and contrary to what you might think, the "aiming" feature works quite well. Sound in the room is quite even, even though the speakers were installed in a bad configuration (set of three splayed in a center cluster). We pushed the outside two to about 160 degrees from each other and curved them to maximum, and made the center one flat and angled toward the middle-back. This did quite well, with just a couple of +2db or so hot spots in the center about halfway back.

I can't say they're the best sounding cabs I've ever heard, but sound quality is nice enough. They do have one feature that an SLA would lack, and that's a protection circuit on the HF unit. We discovered this after experiencing sustained feedback, and believed the drivers were gone. When we contacted TOA, they told us to power cycle with a 1 minute off time and see if they came back... and they did. Pretty neat. I believe they use dome tweeters also, so this is a good feature.

In all honesty Harley if it were me I'd just use the HX5. They make a weatherproof version, come with either a mounting bracket or hanging eyes and they sound pretty good if you use their recommended processor settings. Weatherproofing wood speakers is no easy feat. Save yourself some headaches down the line when the coating starts to fail and the non-water resistant drivers are tanked.
