amp for wedgehorns

#1 Post by el_ingeniero »

I'm thinking of building wedgehorns, someday.

I'd like to have separate mixes for strings, vocals, bass, piano/bandleader.
I'm guessing I need 2 8" and 2 10", or maybe just build all 10" and be done with it.

I don't need it incredibly loud, this is for acoustic groups.

A Behringer EPX304 pushes 50 Watts into 8 Ohms. Enough, or do I need more juice, like a couple of EPQ450s?

50 watts per cab is plenty.
As for W10, very few need it. You get the low end off the mains; even OTops or DRs are essentially omni-directional below 200Hz, and of course subs are. Except for the largest of stages all the monitors need to provide are the directional frequencies out of the mains that aren't heard on stage.

So a clutch of WH8s then? What's the recommended driver for that?

I was looking at the nice wedgehorn build with the curved grill, I liked what he was doing for daisy chaining the cabs.

My thought was to daisy chain the monitors end to end using 16AWG 4 pair cable and NL8 hardware, and use a 4 position switch to select the amp channel each cab services. That way I could have the same monitor mix going to different parts of the stage, though if I'm not careful I could end up with a 1 Ohm load if all the speakers were selecting the same channel.

Alternatively, I could just number each wedge and assign it a specific monitor channel. Safer, but less flexible.

Either way, it would definitely cut down cut down on stage clutter, speed up setup and tear down, and prevent putting monitors on main amp channels, without the hazards of 1/4" hardware.

That's a lot of NL8 connectors and multi-strand cable. Bear in mind that NL8s cost about twice what NL4s do - across the board.

I get to make up some of that by having shorter cables: 1 standard run from the amp rack, and shorter cables between the monitors.

The wins are shorter setup and teardown times and being a bit more amateur-proof.

No free lunch.
