Generator

#1 Post by Ryker1080 »

I have been trying to find out how much generator power i need to run my sound system. i took my single crown xti 4000 amp out for a test to power two of my tuba 60's, i was running this along with two mackies 450 powered speakers off of a 5000 watt generator. it seems that the 5000 watt generator was not enough power for me as i was only getting a 10 v output from the crown xti 4000.

I have a festival i need to attend in 2 weeks time and i am planning on setting up 4 DR 250's running off of a QSC RMX 1450 and 4 Tuba 60s running off of 2 Crown XTI 4000's. would anybody know what kind of power i will require to run this setup? or will anybody be able to suggest a way to find out? :D

I rent a Honda generator that is rated for 2000w one or two times a year. I am able to run to the limiters (~38v) on all my systems. It seems unlikely that the fault is with the generator. It is possible that the specific power tap you are plugged into has a very limited rating.

I would suspect the signal chain setup before the generator.

have heard that switching power supplies and some generators do not mix well do not know why.. i have powered up two crown xls 602 one xls 802 and a behringer ep2500 with a 3000w generator all of them loaded to 4 ohms plus the mixer and 3 signal processors for 6 hours w/o a problem
There is a very thin line between fail and success. It is very thin so, why are you scared???

I remember something like this being posted before....something about sine wave, but I can't rmemeber what.

Is your amp limited, or the amp input limited?

A 5000 watt generator should be able to run 41 amps. watts / volts = amp.

The XTI 4000 draws 10.5 amps, Mackie's show 300 watts= 2.5 amps each. If your generator was not able to run all of them then I think your genset may have some issues. I would try another genset. Look up the specs on your gear and calculate the amps required. Then you will know what kind of generator you will need. Once you know just plug the numbers into the formula and Volts will always be 120 so you just need one other number to figure out the equation.

Good luck with the festival,

Oscar

I would look into running two of those smaller honda generators eu2001. I ran a pair of ot12 and t39 and an xti 4000 on one last year for a parade. I dunno if it would handle two but you can daiy chain two of those generators together and i bet it would run your system fine.

Here is a link to some pure sine wave inverters and the who's and whats of what in the heck that means. http://www.nooutage.com/inverter1.htm Basically an inverter changes direct current to alternate current. The process by which it accomplishes the task determines which babies like the formula and which ones don't. A quick search revealed that some honda generators put out pure sine wave ac. (the stuff computers and amplifiers like)

Oh one other piece of equipment that might help is called kill-a-watt. you plug your gear into it and then play for a couple of minutes or half an hour as it's only got the one 3 prong outlet, and it will tell you what you are drawing in peaks and constant power. You may have to do different parts of your set up identically over and over until you have everything that runs tallied up, but at least this way you will know really how much juice you need when you start calling about genny rentals.

last I looked the killawatt thingy was 20 bucks

here is a better explanation page http://www.sinetech.co.za/invselect.htm took me a while to find one.
