Omnitop 12 (second revision) - test build

#1 Post by lazyman »

This build was happened on summer-fall 2010. Me and my friend have some spare time and material in garage. Its not adequate material, i know (it was build from MDF 18mm, and compensated for dimension). I have this MDF panels laying around, and have decided to try and build this boxes. There was also a problem of obtaining lots of materials, so we took time to experiment with saw and practice building skills. There are some pictures, and review to follow.

Conclusions:
Don't build from MDF, its heavy and create lots of dust when catted.
Montagefix-PU is equivalent for PL premium.
Shitty piezos are still shitty, EQ can help but cannot do miracles.
Next time i will pay for pre-cut panels. Its not that expensive and lot quicker, and much more precise!
I have tested this boxes spl-wise, and probably not use more then 2 most of the time.

array - piezos are not Monacor or CPC, but cheap chinese kind. I cannot obtain proper piezos for good price, so probably will go with ASD Eminece driver.

I'm confused

Why are there six of them if it was a test build? Also, remember to get the new revision. And lastly, yes cheap piezos suck and the asd does fine but I do prefer the melded 1016 arrays. Both of them can be eq'ed but even after eq, I found the piezos to simply have more definition.

Easy....this wasn't a pop quiz, it was finals!

4 - OT12 2512

2 - XF210

Ok, originally, i have planned only 2, but friend came with more panels (destroyed closet, cabinet, don't know to translate which peace of furniture was that). We have to much time and no jobs at this time, so every evening was cutting time. Also first tube of glue was partially dried-out, i have not know that, although was little heavy to push glue out of package.

So, this probably would be scrapped and build properly because boxes are too heavy.

And, this newer design seems to me more complicated, and don't know is it worth. And, also, finding the right driver is the challenge over-here. Dealers seems to have only expensive RCF, 18sound and P-Audio drivers, Eminence are available on order, but you must wait for months, and also comes expensive.
So, only piezos i bought new. And drivers are second-hand Kappa-12. If I has to buy new, its now cheaper to by second hand boxes with "badge". Seems that everybody listen with there eyes this days. But i will use this only for occasional private parties, so i doesn't matter.

It was a challenge to see if DIY can come close to sound of some "of the shelf" boxes.

I have available Monacor 1016 for staggering price of 10€ a peace, so its not an option. Even the recomended ND350 from RCF are cheaper than piezo array!

Your build is a great example of using what you've got in a less than perfect marketplace. Bravo!

In place where i can get max $60 for dj-night (with equipment),
and average price for local-dj in my town is max $30,
and I am the most expensive dj in town,
and average salary is about 280$, with high unemployment rate,

this was the only way to go. Bills cabs absolutely rocks on price/quality ratio.

Here is the first field-test review.

And thanks to all helpful forum members, it is really hard to find such an non-haters community online this days!
