Wanted......Micro WH

#1 Post by jdawg057 »

I have been scouring the internet looking for plans for personal (mic-stand) monitors and came across this site. I would like to build 5 or 6 of these for my church. We currently use in-ears with Aviom personal mixers, the problem is that the sure headphones we use are constantly being broken and cost a lot to replace. I have used Galaxy hotspots in the past but I would rather find a DIY plan and build them myself. They would need to be powered or we would need to source a small amp for each one as they each carry their own mix. Any chance someone could point me in the right direction?

We don't do mic stand mount monitors, because they don't work well.

Thanks for your reply. What would be your recommendation for a small monitor that would work for 5 individual mixes on a small stage without increasing stage noise significantly?

What's the setup? Is everything direct? Using amps? Just need vocals in the monitors?

BTW....how did you end up spoiling them so bad with 5 mixes? 2 years ago, I took the Praise Band off individual mixes, gave the entire band one mix and told them to learn to listen and place themselves in the mix. Within two weeks, all the complaints about monitors went away, singers got better and the band started to play as a unit instead of "more me".

Sorry....that's my rant for the day.

And sooooo right. Monitors aren't there so you can just hear yourself. You need to hear everyone. I've never run separate mixes, what the audience hears is what we hear.

+1. I remember from middle school band...what a great experience when I look back. Our music folders reminded us to listen and blend...listen and blend. Man...I sure wish all musicians I've sat in with could have had those folders.

But the bass gets lost in the shuffle. Or so I'm told.

Ok....More background. It is an odd stage about 50 feet wide by only 10 feet deep with vocals and instruments spread across the entire width with drums to one side. Years ago we had monitors with 2 monitor mixes. We had trouble finding monitors that you could hear at all when standing almost right over them. Everyone was complaining about not being able to hear and so the sound folks would turn up the monitors. The stage volume began to overpower the house and the over all sound quality was very bad. Thats when we transitioned to Aviom mixers and in ears as well as Roland E-drums . We kept 3 floor monitors for the vocals. Fast forward 10 years and we decided it would be good to liven things up a bit and go back to acoustic drums. Add in the fact that we have spent a great deal of money on maintaining the in-ears that break, and that us "middle aged" folks hate having things in our ears, and we come to today. We would like to go back to monitors without having the stage volume come up to much. Thus the thought of the hotspots. I would love to re-design the stage to have more room, but that is not going to happen anytime soon.

We typically have 2 guitars, bass, keys, drums, 3 vocalist and as many as 4 additional vocals from the musicians. All mucisians play through DI's. We haven't allowed amps on the stage to keep volume down until we got the acoustic drums and now we allow the bassist to use a small 1x12 line 6 amp. We mic the drums as well (semi-isolated booth). I really appreciate the help and am not against taking the individual mixes away if we could find the right monitors.

Curious about the size/shape/acoustics of the room. With such a wide narrow stage it seems that having fewer monitor mixes would actually increase the coherency of the sound. The Wedgehorn is a great little monitor. I vote for it over hotspots.

First off, welcome to the forum!

Since basically everyone is/was using personal mixes/IEM, how about building a few of the small Wedgehorns and place them across the stage as needed. The dispersion of this cab is quite wide, and the sound is clear. Put everyone in the Wedgehorns, or do the necessary pans or whatever, and I think there will be satisfaction. It may different than what everyone is used to, but then again, they had to adapt before this.
