New Member and advice needed on what to build?
Greetings,
Chris from Quad City area. Been an avid woodworker for 35 year and play drums and bass. Built several PA and Guitar cabs in the past but nothing like these designs from Bill. They look great (and sound good from the Youtube clips I've listened to). I'm looking for the right cabinet for Electronic Drums. I'm currently using an Peavey SP2 and it works okay, but HEAVY. Obviously needs to be full range so it can handle lows for the Kick and the cymbal highs. May not be a one cabinet solution. Thoughts?

Tops and subs is the ideal way to go. It's a lot easier to put these tops up on poles. Since you are a woodworker, go for Dr200 tops using the Titan39 for subs.
Again, since you are a woodworker, get the CD of plans! It gets addictive.
BTW, welcome to the forum!

Is this for on-stage monitoring? If so, an Omni12 or Omni15 may suit your needs.

For monitoring I think that's overkill. Jack 10 or Wedgehorn 10 should be plenty.Mikey wrote:Is this for on-stage monitoring? If so, an Omni12 or Omni15 may suit your needs.

Not for drums. He needs a full range system, either Omnis or a sub/top. Perhaps a Jack 15 if the bottom end need not be too full.AntonZ wrote: For monitoring I think that's overkill. Jack 10 or Wedgehorn 10 should be plenty.

Even if there's a PA with subs running? My drummer plays monitors smaller than Jack10/WH10 when playing e-drums with PA.

I'm basing his needs on what he's using now. Maybe that's overkill, I can't say.AntonZ wrote:Even if there's a PA with subs running? My drummer plays monitors smaller than Jack10/WH10 when playing e-drums with PA.

One benefit to building an omni 15 is that it is also an excellent bass cabinet.

Thanks for the replies so far. I should have elaborated a bit more. I'm using my current set up to amplify a Yamaha electronic drum kit for live contemporary worship in a medium sized church. Pop and Rock mostly. Ideally I'd like something that would provide more kick that you can "feel". I'm thinking I need a sub to get that frequency coverage. I also had to add a Piezo horn to my kit to extend the frequency on the high end. The SP2 just didn't provide the "shimmer" of the cymbals. Something about that 20-30K range makes a difference. I'm running the kit through a compressor and a 500W mono-bridged amp. Long range goal is a set up that all the instrumentalists can run through (guitar, bass, drums and piano).

If you go the t-39 and dr200 route you'll need a crossover. This would be the best fit for your long term plans. OTOH if you build an Omni12 or Omni15 you won't need the x-over now. And you could always re-purpose the omni to a bass cabinet later.
The cost of both options would be about the same (depending on the x-over you choose). I would recommend the DR200/t-39 option.
IME most kick drums have most of their energy at 60hz and 120hz . 60hz will give you the feel in the seat of your pants. 120hz is where the chest feel is.

Re: New Member and advice needed on what to build?
I replaced the Peavey SP2G with a DR250/T48 combo and it made all the difference in the world. That shimmer you're talking about is definitly there in the DR250, just make sure you build the piezo array to it's full size.
The T48 is a great speaker but it does take a lot of room so I would vote for the T39. Be sure to measure out the area where you want to put the subs and see if you'll have to be moving it out of the way or not as a church may be used for many things. Also, consider what finish you want to make it blend as well as possible.
