2 X AutoTubas @ a House Party

#1 Post by loudsubz »

So my cousin had a smallish house party at his house last night. He doesn't have a very good stereo so we offered to bring ours and setup for him. I had made a pair of W8-740C loaded 14" wide AutoTubas the week prior.

I was running them off a RMX 850 with a max of ~12-15vac. I had them corner loaded in the basement in a room about 12 X 12. Highs were nothing special, just some HLCD boat speakers I had lying around (starting my build of OTOP 12's soon).

The night started off with some beach themed music (oldies, beach boys etc), nothing spectacular about the bass, but you could notice the presence of low end. At this point I was mainly playing off grooveshark as people were not ready to dance yet (still playing games, walking around and watching the hockey game etc). As the night progressed and people sarted to flock into the room I got out my hercules steel and started to do some mixing with the top 40 dance/club and pop tunes (girls requested stuff like bieber, kanye west etc). At this point you could really notice the ATs doing their thing. Bass was full and filled the room nicely. It was spread out evenly in the room with no bass traps. I had a really high concentration going up the stairs from the basement. When you first opened the door to go downstairs it hit you like a wall, and got you all tingly inside :)

One track in particular (Kanye West - Monster) the lows were incredible, and I have honestly never heard bass this clean and "thick" - is that a word to even describe the bass ??? lol before. I was truly impressed. Considering these are made for the Auto enviroment I was floored even more. Everyone though I had 2 12s in the corner. Once nice aspect of the AT is that I could also stack them and used very little space in the corner of the room, so you could get more dancing girls in there :)

Overall more than happy with this build. My brother is throwing them in his car to have a listen to them. I am hoping they sound as good in there too.

Nice to hear you had similar success. I'v done the same thing with 2 16" wide TAT's V plated in a corner and the results were very impressive (loaded with jbl gto 804 8") powered by one side of a lem 2-420 getting just under 200w rms each :P. had to put a 48db butterworth highpass at 40hz though to keep excursion under control.

Have also used them outside at a farm party and they did perform quite well with a v plate.

They only get better in a car :D have used both in my friends peugot 206 getting about 100rms each and it was abit crazy in there.
2 TAT 16" loaded with JBL GTO 804 + V plate
Tannoy Precision 8D monitors, Tannoy System 800 monitors
Minidsp 2x4, Berry DCX2496, Lem 420 amplifier

To do:
17" Autotuba with JBL GTO 1002D 10"

Most of that "heavy bass" is centered in 35-50hz as with most music.

Thanks for the graph. I meant I have never heard the bass that "thick" listening to other subs before. Its hard to explain but the bass from the Tuba envelopes you and you can feel the SPL but in other ported or direct radiator designs I have heard before it just sounds loud, must be from the added distortion in those designs.

I find the AutoTuba to be very amazing and very under-rated. A pair of them with Tang Band drivers, corner-loaded, sound just as good to me as the Tuba Home Theater, actually better, because the pair smooth out room nodes.

Now you are ruined... all other speakers will now sound "dull and witless". You have "heard THE Music".

With the David being a SORT OF auto tuba and just listening to one with the other speaker being a LARGE SLA, yeah that would crush. Might consider a pair of Davids and dominate all indoors.

Good to hear about the success!
I've got a 14" AT with the MCM 8 in my wagon and I just love the way it plays from 35 to 60hz.
