sound advice for my set up!

hi every one. im running 2 x dr 280 on a c-mark mr2450 and 2 x tht on t.amp ta2400 with behringer cross over and a manual eq this sounds ok but theres a lot of hi end its quite overwhelming at times. i use the 22piezo array also would cd sound better and is it just a poor quality eq thats causing this is there something i can do to the speakers? thinking about the pa+ or is there something better for those speakers. thanks guys. will

Hey Will,
If you can give us a more detailed description of the "hrashness" and when it is present, we can help more. Is it in certain music? Live or recorded? is it dependant upon relative position to the speakers?

It sounds like an EQ issue to me. I can vouch for the melded arrays. They can sound awesome. I would try cutting the whole top end of your eq until the offending frequencies are muffled and then bring it back up slowly until it sounds like you like it. You could also try reversing the freq. response chart in the spl section of the forum if you haven't already.

How new are you plans? If you aren't using the diffuser that bill put together awhile ago, that could help too. I find that there is a "hot spot" around the middle and just off access on my arrays. The diffuser should help that. I haven't tried it with mine yet because it is not that big of an issue to me.

Wow, you have quite a set-up. It seems like overkill to me, since guidelines are THT for home theatre and DR280's in 4's or more, but then again, I have no idea how you're using them. I'm guessing the 280's have a great kick sound.

The piezos need to be EQ'd, since they have a natural bump around 10k that gives the highs a particular sound. It may be the hi-fi nature of the speakers that's giving you more clarity than you're used to. Dialing down the highs will give you a warmer sound, and it will still be clear when cranked up loud.

So, yes, a better EQ/crossover.
(EDIT: let me rephrase that: a better EQ'ing and crossing over. It sounds like you need to do a better job isolating the peak piezo frequencies and possibly bring down the output of the tops compared to the subs.)

my dr280s have a fairly large cut around the 5khz region to tame the harshness and i reckon they need reined in compared to 2 tht. careful eq on those boxes makes me a happy camper.

If you eq your cabs by ear at a low volume then you will more than likely have a brighter than comfortable cab when run up to war volume due to the differing sensitivity of your ears at low volumes. see 'fetcher-munsen curves' to see the effect.

basically your ear is less sensitive to high frequecies when the volume is low. so if you boost them at this point, when you turn up the speakers, they can be overly bright!

With my DR200's, I use a -6dB/oct slope to the EQ curve starting at 10k. I also low pass at 18kHz. That helps a lot.

right thanks guys this is helpfull. we use the set up mainly for dnb at partys n small venus. are eq isnt the best bit of kit so we will upgrade. since i posted we have decided to build t30s and a few of them with more 280s. it is around 10khz it was a combination of bad mp3s and a badly designed venue. my partner uses wav files not mp3 and it sounds sweet so we need to get it through to the djs. any more thoughts would be very much appreciated as im always info hungry

Behringer DEQ 2496 is well beloved by many. Can be had for < $300. I'llproolly end up with one.

Mind you, What I really drool over is a Dolby Lake Contour.

Nothing against mp3 but 320 minimum. I thought you would say that bill is it worth getting the dbx pa +? Any experience of this? Also what's peoples thoughts on crown xti2000. Thanks

Get what you can afford. Steer clear of the "Made in China" stuff (Pyle, Gemini, most of the Behringer EQs, etc) and get at least 15 band per channel. Rane, dbx, DOD, Peavey are well known, name brands.

The Behringer DEQ2496 and the DCX2496 are an exception to the "No Chinese crap!" rule. Decent quality and excellent bang-for-buck value.

Thanks for that advice. Any thoughts on crown xls 802s? Also is there any good plans for something like twin 15" direct radiating mid bass cabs maybe cross fire the two horns in the cab. Would this be feasible?

My crown 802 thermalled out on me, again the other night. Was runnin it on 4t48 with no clip nights all night the on last band - trip. It happened before and I was only using it as a temporary backup. it should be a perfect amp for 4 tops but it's tripped out on them before too. Don't trust it now at all. It's getting shifted to monitor duty.

indeed iv been searching and so far its been the most appropriate amp that iv found. Not so sure now. Are they not good at 4ohm. They do come with 3 year warranty which is a bonus. Hmm iv been using big heavy old units but its time to update I'm just worried about light weight new tech not cutting the mustard. Any one else use these amps had this problem?
